Google paused its latest artificial intelligence (AI) bot Gemini’s image-making feature’s generation of humans on Thursday following massive backlash to its alleged racial bias against white people.
Social media users have referred to Gemini as being “woke” because of how it produced racially and sexually diverse images in response to almost any prompt about people, regardless of factual accuracy. “We’re aware that Gemini is offering inaccuracies in some historical image generation depictions,” Google acknowledged on X Wednesday. “We’re working to improve these kinds of depictions immediately. Gemini’s AI image generation does generate a wide range of people. And that’s generally a good thing because people around the world use it. But it’s missing the mark here.”
For instance, Gemini produced racially diverse results when a user asked it to make an image of a “medieval king of England.”

X got flooded with numerous similar examples, including Gemini producing images of an Asian woman and a black man in papal garb when a user asked it for images of the pope.
“We are working to improve Gemini’s ability to generate images of people,” Gemini says when prompted to produce an image of any person. “We expect this feature to return soon and will notify you in release updates when it does.”
Moreover, although Google did not acknowledge Gemini’s text outputs, a Daily Caller News Foundation review found the bot offering defenses for terrorist group Hamas’ antisemitism and drawing a moral equivalency between the United States and China.
Google did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
