Palm trees, beaches and apparently suicide squeezes.
Down in South Florida, Fort Myers to be specific, South Walton High School reigned victorious Thursday in the FHSAA 3A state baseball championship game. And here’s the crazy thing about it: the Seahawks got the win in walk-off fashion using the rare suicide squeeze. Hudson Quinn, a catcher, went to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning, doing so with a runner on third and only one out on the board. Rather than trying to be an ultimate hero and swinging for power, Quinn pulled off an immaculate bunt that was pinpointed perfectly between the third baseman and pitcher, which resulted in outfielder Declan Fowler sprinting down the third base line.
Fowler ultimately scored, which gave South Walton the 6-5 victory against North Broward Prep for the first state title in the history of their program.

People like to say that Texas is the king of high school football, but I’ve always put up the argument for Florida, and after this, we might have to give the Sunshine State the title for baseball too. I mean, seriously, who else is pulling off this kind of chaos with suicide squeezes?
By the way, shoutout to Fort Myers. I look forward to seeing you guys this summer.
