Wyndham Clark just claimed his second U.S. Open title, but the story chasing him this week is a four-word tweet he fired off a decade ago.
The freshly crowned champion sat down with Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” on June 24 and was pressed on a December 2016 post in which he wrote, “I hate baker mayfield.” Most observers figured the dig traced back to college football allegiances, since Clark transferred from Oklahoma State while Mayfield was winning a Heisman Trophy at rival Oklahoma, according to Golf Digest.
The truth ran deeper. After a short pause, Clark waved off his handlers and spilled the real reason. (RELATED: American Golfer Wears USA Hockey Jersey Mid-Tournament In Front Of Booing Canadians)
“I’m trying to decide if I should tell the story,” Clark said on the podcast. “Screw it, I don’t care. People already hate me. No, it’s not that bad, my PR team is here […] My girlfriend at the time cheated on me with Baker Mayfield.”

Clark made clear the grudge has long since faded.
“Here is what I will say, I’m actually a Baker fan now. I think he’s a homie. You know, that’s your initial response, like screw that guy,” he told the hosts, redirecting his frustration toward the ex-girlfriend rather than the quarterback.
He even floated a peace offering.
“I actually hope this is a bro moment for us to be like, ‘Oh bro, I didn’t know, my bad. She never told me,’” Clark said. “And I’d be like ‘It’s all good, we’re homies, let’s play golf!’”
Mayfield, the No. 1 overall pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2018, now starts at quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Clark closed out the U.S. Open win Sunday at Shinnecock Hills against a Long Island gallery that openly rooted for him to fail, one year after he apologized for smashing lockers at Oakmont.
