The Republican National Committee reportedly sent a fundraising text message attributed to Vice President JD Vance to their mailing list this week, admitting to the high cost of groceries just days after he bragged about the economy.
“If you can’t give right now, don’t Natalie. Groceries cost what they cost,” the text message shared by Washington Post’s Natalie Allison read.
The RNC did not immediately respond to JS when reached out to confirm the validity of the text message. However, Newsweek and Mediate reported the text message also asked the receiver to answer a survey and links to a webpage titled, “A letter from JD Vance.”
“I want to start by apologizing to you. Not for anything I’ve done — for what this business has done to you. I’m sorry for the countdown clocks that expire at midnight and reset by morning,” the lengthy letter, allegedly from Vance, read.
Vance’s letter went on to ask for donations, but wrote, “I’m not going to make you feel guilty over a number. … But if you want to back it up, I’d be honored to earn it — and you ought to be able to see exactly where it goes. That’s the receipt above. Itemized. No fine print,” the letter ended.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly dismissed the affordability crisis during his administration’s second term. He even went so far as to call it a “scam” made up by Democrats, but despite his denial, a majority of Americans are growingly disapproving of how he is handling the economy.
The reported message also comes just days after Vance appeared at a rally in his hometown of Middletown, Ohio, where he spoke on affordability, and told the crowd, “We’re finally seeing that American dream of homeownership become accessible again to our young people.”
Users online ridiculed both Vance and the RNC.
