Lawrence O’Donnell said President Donald Trump may have been invited to his “last political convention” on Wednesday after he hit the stage for the Republican National Committee’s “Trump-a-Palooza” in Dallas, Texas.
“It is possible that two years from now, Donald Trump could be so politically toxic that he will not be invited to speak at the next Republican National Convention,” the MS NOW host argued.
“And so this, this thing tonight could be Donald Trump’s last hurrah on a convention stage or a pretend convention stage. It could be his last outburst of pure madness from a convention stage.”
Trump, at what O’Donnell called a “profoundly stupid idea” in the RNC’s “midterm convention,” essentially bribed American adults with a pitch to send them $5,000 checks should the GOP keep control of the House and Senate.
His appearance at the convention arrives in the midst of his unpopular war of choice with Iran, which has driven gas prices up and soured his approval ratings.
Trump, in remarks to the media ahead of his convention speech, claimed that oil prices would go “tumbling downward” right after the election, adding that his gas would sink to $2 a gallon and it would take “a little bit longer” than the midterms.
Sound familiar? Trump made the “same promise” back in September 2024, per O’Donnell, who tossed to a clip of the president’s pre-election gas prices vow during a speech at The Economic Club of New York.
“Donald Trump has convinced himself and no one else in the Republican Party that what voters really want to hear now is more lies from Donald Trump,” said O’Donnell, who noted that some Republicans running for reelection boycotted the event.
O’Donnell said Trump’s big price promise and failure to deliver on it might be why Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), who is running for reelection, skipped out on Trump’s “self-worshipping” convention.
Gas was $5.03 a gallon in Alaska on Wednesday, $0.81 more than the national average, said O’Donnell, citing AAA’s figures.
“We already have proof that when Donald Trump makes a promise about what is going to happen after an election,” O’Donnell said, “Donald Trump is lying.”
