Affordability in a car market usually looks like a math problem. Every so often it turns out to be a permission problem.
Americans have spent four years watching window stickers climb and calling it inflation. The average new vehicle sold for $50,089 in August, the first month of 2026 that the industry average cleared $50,000, according to Kelley Blue Book.
Buyers feel it without reading the data.
“Many American households are under significant financial pressure,” said Erin Keating, executive analyst at Cox Automotive, in comments published by Kelley Blue Book.
Electric cars sit higher up the ladder. The cheapest new EV on sale in the U.S. starts at $29,990 before destination, a price Nissan (NSANY) called “the lowest starting MSRP for any new EV currently on sale in the U.S.,” according to Electrek.
The $7,500 federal tax credit that used to close that gap expired after Sept. 30, 2025, and nothing replaced it.
So the American EV conversation has hardened into a waiting game. Wait for cheaper cells, wait for a smaller model, wait for a three-year-old lease return to hit a used lot at a workable price.
On Sept. 10, Geely Auto (GELYY) stopped waiting. The Chinese automaker’s Galaxy brand launched the Galaxy TT electric sedan at a limited-time starting price of 129,900 yuan, or roughly $19,170, according to CnEVPost.

What $19,170 buys in China right now
The entry version carries a 63.8-kWh lithium iron phosphate pack from CATL and a range of 640 km on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), about 398 miles on China’s domestic test cycle.
Every trim in the lineup ships with an 800-volt architecture and 6C fast charging that moves the battery from 10% to 80% in about 11.8 minutes.
That launch price landed 16,000 yuan below the pre-sale figure announced in August, and the entry trim picked up 100 km of range on the way, according to CnEVPost.
The rear-drive models produce 245 kW, or 329 horsepower, and reach 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds. At 4,999 mm long, the sedan is bigger than a Toyota Camry.
Step up one trim, and you get lidar and Nvidia’s (NVDA) Thor-U chip running Geely’s assisted-driving software, a 15.4-inch center screen and a 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display.
When I stacked that spec sheet against what $19,170 buys an American shopper, the gap had nothing to do with badges or leather. It was architectural. There is no 800-volt car at that price in a U.S. showroom, and no one is building toward one.

Why the Galaxy TT never reaches a US driveway
The first wall is arithmetic. A China-built electric car entering the U.S. faces the 2.5% base duty on passenger vehicles, the 100% Section 301 tariff imposed in 2024, and the 25% Section 232 tariff applied to imported vehicles in 2025.
I ran that stack against the sticker. If those duties apply as written, a $19,170 sedan lands closer to $43,600 at the port, before shipping, federal compliance work, crash certification and a dealer network that does not exist. The bargain disappears somewhere in the paperwork.
The second wall ignores price entirely. The Commerce Department’s Connected Vehicle Rule blocks cars with a meaningful ownership or software connection to China, with software restrictions beginning in the 2027 model year and hardware restrictions following in 2030, according to Electrek.
That rule reaches vehicles assembled on American soil. Ownership decides the outcome, not the location of the factory.
What Polestar’s U.S. exit tells investors
Geely has already been through it. Polestar (PSNY), the Swedish EV brand Geely controls, said the Commerce Department declined its authorization, and the denial covers “new model variants from the 2027 model year onwards,” according to electrive.com.
Volvo Cars, also controlled by Geely, was cleared in May after reworking how its vehicle data is governed and routed.
The difference was not the badge. Volvo negotiated with the Bureau of Industry and Security and rebuilt how its data flows, while Polestar expected clearance, did not restructure, and did not appeal.
Polestar then cut its full-year retail sales growth outlook on Sept. 3, citing restructuring tied in part to the U.S. decision.
My read is that those two outcomes set the real cost of entry for any Chinese-linked automaker, and it is not a tariff line item. It is a data-governance rebuild that few brands have reason to fund for a market they cannot serve profitably anyway.
Geely is not standing around waiting for the rule to soften. Exports rose 205% year over year in August to 110,094 vehicles, roughly 41% of total sales, while domestic volume fell about 25%, according to CnEVPost.
The squeeze already shows up in your own driveway math.
New EV sales fell 28% year over year in the first quarter, based on Cox Automotive figures reported by electrive, while transaction prices on three-year-old used EVs rose 6% in the first half of 2026, according to an Edmunds analysis cited by CNBC.

Watch the export line in Geely’s monthly numbers rather than the price tag. It tells you where the world’s cheap electric cars are going, and how long the wall holds before somebody has to explain why a $19,170 sedan counts as a security risk and a $50,089 average does not.
