Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume took a jab at Sen. Eric Schmitt’s (R-Mo.) disastrous airball during ex-special counsel Jack Smith’s hearing on Tuesday, piling on to his online mockery.
Smith appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, where he defended his handling of two federal investigations into President Donald Trump.
At the time, Smith probed allegations of the president’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his mishandling of classified documents. However, both cases were dismissed before going to trial.
Smith’s investigations into Trump caused him to become a target by the GOP, and on Tuesday, a number lawmakers loyal to Trump attempted to smear him.
Including Schmitt, who would go on to call Smith a “dirtbag,” and accused the Trump foe of perjury by asserting that he was in Atlanta, the day after former Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis admitted to having an affair with another prosecutor.
At the time, Willis was in the middle of her own prosecution against Trump.
“What would you say if I had a series of text messages from your team that said you were in Atlanta at a Warrior Hawks game on Feb. 3, 2024, the day after Willis and Wade announced their affair?” Schmitt confidently said Tuesday.
“We’ll put it in a follow-up. You can respond. I think you’ve already perjured yourself,” he followed up.
Schmitt’s accusation, however, fell through after it was revealed that Smith attended an Iowa Hawkeyes game in Maryland, not an Atlanta Hawks game in Atlanta.
“That might be the confusion over the names of the team,” Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) said during the hearing. “But perhaps you should have looked at it more carefully.”
The lawmaker’s embarrassing mistake bewildered his Republican colleague Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) who was visibly aghast on camera. It also earned him some ridicule online, and still, he refused to admit his gaffe.
“It was not a mistake, I asked him if he was in Atlanta,” Schmitt told TMZ’s D.C. reporter Charlie Cotton. “The only NCAA men’s game or NBA game with a 7:30 tipoff was in Atlanta, so I asked him if he was in Atlanta that night.”
“He brought this on himself and deserves the obloquy,” Hume wrote alongside a photo of a clown and a map showing the two very distinct locations.
