A homeowner shot a woman who was trying to break into his home through their rooftop Thursday evening, according to Chicago police.
The homeowner, who doesn’t want to be publicly identified, said that he and his wife were in bed when they heard footsteps on the roof of their Lincoln Park home.
When the husband went to investigate the sounds, he said he saw the shadowy figure of a stranger on his roof and realized they were trying to break in.
The couple called the police to report a suspicious person just before 11 p.m.
A few minutes later, the police received a report of shots fired at the same address.
The couple said they called the police three times to report the situation and that it took them 20 minutes to respond.
When police finally arrived, they found a woman shot in the chest and the wrist on the roof.
Police said the homeowner was a concealed carry license-holder and that he shot the woman to prevent her from breaking into the home.
Investigators believe the woman gained access to the rooftop through a construction site next door. They found a rope draped over the side of the building that she might have used to rappel onto the roof.
They also found what might possibly be heroin and a bag containing hypodermic needles at the scene.
This incident is the second time in a week that a concealed carry-holder shot a person trying to rob them on the North Side of Chicago, according to police. In a separate incident on Wednesday, an armed man in a ski mask tried to rob three people on the street, but he was shot by one of the intended victims and was arrested in a nearby alley.
That suspect was hospitalized after his head grazed by a bullet and also shot in the chest.
