Illinois police have charged two teenagers with murder after they discovered a 15-year-old who was “brutally” murdered “for no apparent reason.”
The Decatur Police Department said that officers were responding to a call for a wellness check on Sunday at about 11:35 p.m. at the 400 block of W. Harrison Street in Decatur.
In an abandoned building at that address, they found a deceased teenage male who had suffered numerous “traumatic injuries.”
Detectives said they arrested two teenage suspects after conducting interviews about the case. Police say that the two lured the teenager to the location and then stabbed him to death.
The victim was later identified by a coroner as Tyler Eubanks of Decatur.
Decatur Police Chief Shane Brandel said in a statement that he was at a loss for words over the incident.
“A teenager was brutally murdered by other teenagers, for no apparent reason. I am saddened for the family of the victim and hope they can eventually find peace,” said Brandel.
“As a father myself, I cannot imagine losing a child and I don’t wish that on anybody,” he added.
The two juvenile suspects were held at the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Facility. They were both charged with first-degree murder.
Brandel went on to say blame societal issues for the murder.
“We have to come together as a community. This is not a police problem. This is a society problem,” said Brandel.
“Until we all see that, and we all do our part to address it, then we will continue to repeat ourselves in offering condolences to victim’s families rather than celebrate true societal harmony,” he concluded.
Decatur is a city located in the center in the state with a population of about 70k residents.
