Jennifer Aniston says new generation finds ‘Friends’ show offensive, and comedy has changed: ‘You have to be very careful’

Actress Jennifer Aniston said that modern audiences are going back to watch the show that made her a star and finding that many of the themes are offensive to them.

Aniston made the comments in an interview with AFP in France about her new comedic mystery movie with Adam Sandler.

“Comedy has evolved, movies have evolved,” said the 54-year-old star.

“Now it’s a little tricky because you have to be very careful, which makes it really hard for comedians, because the beauty of comedy is that we make fun of ourselves, make fun of life,” she explained.

She went on to point out that in the past, comedies could portray bigoted people in order to show how absurd they are, but that was no longer allowed.

“That was hysterical. And it was about educating people on how ridiculous people were,” she added. “And now we’re not allowed to do that.”

Aniston touched upon criticism from modern viewers against the “Friends” show.

“There’s a whole generation of people, kids, who are now going back to episodes of ‘Friends’ and find them offensive,” she continued.

“There were things that were never intentional and others,” Aniston said, “well, we should have thought it through — but I don’t think there was a sensitivity like there is now.”

She said this sensitivity is why Hollywood makes fewer comedies.

“Everybody needs funny! The world needs humor! We can’t take ourselves too seriously. Especially in the United States,” Aniston said.

“Everyone is far too divided,” she concluded.

Aniston stars in the sequel to “Murder Mystery” with Sandler, streaming Friday on Netflix.
