Parents of students at a California elementary school are demanding answers after a teacher was arrested for allegedly showing up for class while drunk, according to the district.
Police said they were called to a schoolroom at the Nuestro Elementary School in Live Oak at about 8 a.m. on Monday over reports of a teacher who appeared to be intoxicated.
Wendy Munson, 57, was arrested for suspicion of DUI after an investigation by police.
Police said Munson showed signs of intoxication, and she allegedly failed a field sobriety test. She was arrested after video showed that she had driven herself to the school while being allegedly intoxicated.
When she was tested, her blood alcohol level was more than twice as much as the legal limit, investigators said.
Munson was also charged with potential child endangerment.
Travis Reed, a father of a student at Nuestro Elementary School, told KRCA-TV that he was “infuriated” when he heard his child’s teacher was arrested.
“We trust our kids to these people to take care of them and keep them safe. And if you’re drunk, you can’t keep anybody safe, in my opinion,” Reed said.
He went on to excoriate the school for not being transparent enough about the incident.
“It seems like a hush order here at the school,” he said. “They don’t want to tell anyone anything.”
Sutter County Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Scott Smallwood told reporters that the amount of alcohol in Munson’s blood made her “extremely intoxicated.”
Reed told KOVR-TV that school officials said that the teacher had been sober for five years. KOVR reported that Munson had prior arrests related to drinking but that officials didn’t provide details about those arrests.
“I think she should have called out of work,” said Kaitlynn Conley, another parent, to KOVR-TV. “I know people have fun weekends, but that was definitely not OK as an educator.”
Munson is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
