Social media video from the financial district in lower Manhattan indicated that a parking garage had partially collapsed on Tuesday at about 4:30 p.m.
There are multiple reports of people trapped and injured from the collapse, and officials said at least one person has died and four have been hospitalized.
Rescue crews and fire department crews are responding to the scene and searching for people who might have been injured or trapped.
Here’s another video from social media showing the scene:
Another video on social media reportedly showed the collapse from a car inside the garage.
The NYC mayor’s office said that the parking garage was on Ann Street, between Nassau Street and William Street.
The New York City Fire Department used drones and a Boston Dynamics robotic dog to help search the rubble.
Some witnesses have said they heard what sounded like an explosion.
“There was just a huge boom, and I was like, ‘What the hell was that?’ We saw smoke rising, heard a man screaming, a woman screaming,” said 19-year-old student Jadess Speller. “There was debris and we saw cars pilled on top of each other.”
In a similar story from 2015, three stories of a parking garage collapsed at the famed Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. One person was injured in that incident.
This is a developing story and will be updated with additional information.
