An angry mob captured and beat down a murder suspect who police were trying to apprehend in Cleveland, Ohio, and the altercation was caught on video.
Police released body camera video to WOIO-TV from officers who responded to the mob on June 5 just hours after they investigated a murder.
Investigators were seeking a suspect in the death of 30-year-old Billy Legrone in the Brooklyn Centre neighborhood at about 7:30 p.m. on the 3800 block of West 38th St.
About three hours later, police responded to a mob composed of friends and family members of the murdered man beating the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Jerome Lee, in front of a convenience store at the corner of West 38th St. and Denison Ave.
The mob scattered for a few moments when the police arrived and Lee could be seen lying on the ground for a split second. After police grabbed Lee, the crowd began to yell at them and at Lee.
At one point, one woman yelled “That’s the [expletive] that did it!”
Police were able to apprehend Lee and rescue him from the angry mob by surrounding him in order to bust through the crowd and place him in a squad car.
He was arrested that night, and ten days later, he was indicted by a Cuyahoga County grand jury on numerous charges related to the murder of Legrone. Among the charges were aggravated murder, two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, one count of discharge of firearm on or near prohibited premises, two counts of improperly discharging into habitation, and two counts of having weapons under disability.
