A large majority of Americans are opposed to transgender athletes competing against those of opposite biological gender, according to a new poll.
The Gallup poll found that 69% of respondents opposed transgender athletes being allowed to compete with those of their gender identity instead of their biological gender.
When the same question was asked in 2021, 62% said the same, meaning that the transgender agenda had lost support over two years.
Not only did that opinion gain by eight percentage points, but the opposite opinion lost by seven percentage points.
Only 26% said they supported transgender athletes competing against those of their chosen gender identity while 34% said the same two years ago.
NBC News quoted a transgender activist who blamed right-wing rhetoric for the lessening support of the LGBTQ agenda.
“The attacks on trans people have been very acute and vicious,” said Alejandra Caraballo. “It’s basically been the only thing that the far-right talks about so it’s not surprising that, in light of all of these concentrated attacks against trans people, that support has started to dip.”
The Gallup poll also found that more people believed changing one’s gender is “morally wrong,” up from 51% two years ago to 55% currently.
A separate poll from the Public Religion Research Institute found similar results in June when they asked Americans whether they believed that there were only two genders.
That poll found that 65% of people agreed with the statement, which has grown in support from 2021 when only 59% of people agreed with it. Only 34% of respondents said that gender included a “range of many possible gender identities.”
