Employees at a Goodwill store in Arizona notified police that they had found what appeared to be a real human skull inside of a donation box on Tuesday.
The store was located in Goodyear, a suburb of Phoenix with a population of 95,000 people.
Police released a photograph of the skull that showed someone had placed a fake eye in one of its sockets.
Lisa Berry, a spokesperson for Goodyear Police Department, told reporters in a media briefing that the skull had been inspected by the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner.
“This is an unusual situation,” she said.
“We did speak with the medical examiner’s office, they did confirm that it is fact a human skull, but at this point, and this is preliminary, it appears to be historic, ancient and does not appear to have any forensic value at all, and what that means is that no crime is really attached to this skull,” Berry added.
She went on to say that the skull was found in a box with other donations related to taxidermy.
“Normal types of taxidermy, replica animal bones, things of that nature,” Berry said.
Shoppers at the Goodwill were shocked to hear about the discovery and said nothing like that had happened before.
“That’s creepy. That’s crazy. We come here all the time,” said one person to KSAZ-TV.
A spokesperson for Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona said that the employees followed their official protocol to contact police when a suspicious item is found.
Berry said the police investigation into the skull was ongoing.
