A viral video shared on X, formerly Twitter, purports to show recent flooding on the New York City subway.

Verdict: False

The video is not recent. The original clip, which has also been posted to X, shows flooding that occurred on the New York City subway in 2021.

Fact Check:

New York City experienced intense flooding as a result of nearly eight inches of rain Friday, according to CNN. The flooding, which overwhelmed the city’s sewer and subway systems, prompted Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul to declare a state of emergency, the outlet reported.

“People are swimming in the subway in New York City. just [sic] think of all the trash and rodent feces and diseases. NYC MTA is in a state of emergency due to heavy rain and flooding,” the X video, viewed over one million times, purports. The video shows a woman entering the subway station, where the water is waist-deep.

The video is not recent, however. The original clip, which has also been posted to X, shows flooding that occurred on the New York City subway in 2021. The video’s caption indicates it shows the 157th Street subway station. (RELATED: No, USA Today Did Not Report Zelenskyy’s Security Got In A Bar Fight In NYC)

“Some subway system ya got there. This is the 157th St. 1 line right now. @NYCMayor @BilldeBlasio,” the video’s caption reads.

The video was included in a July 2021 article from Mediaite covering flash flooding that impacted the New York City subway system at the time. Other clips featured in the article showed passengers attempting to use trash bags in a potato sack-style race to combat the flooding in the subway.

Likewise, Check Your Fact did not find the viral X video in any credible news reports about recent flooding on the New York City subway system. The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) also did not reference the video on its website or verified social media accounts.

Check Your Fact has contacted the MTA for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
