Fact Check:
New York City experienced intense flooding as a result of nearly eight inches of rain Friday, according to CNN. The flooding, which overwhelmed the city’s sewer and subway systems, prompted Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul to declare a state of emergency, the outlet reported.
“People are swimming in the subway in New York City. just [sic] think of all the trash and rodent feces and diseases. NYC MTA is in a state of emergency due to heavy rain and flooding,” the X video, viewed over one million times, purports. The video shows a woman entering the subway station, where the water is waist-deep.
The video is not recent, however. The original clip, which has also been posted to X, shows flooding that occurred on the New York City subway in 2021. The video was included in a July 2021 article from Mediaite covering flash flooding that impacted the New York City subway system at the time. Other clips featured in the article showed passengers attempting to use trash bags in a potato sack-style race to combat the flooding in the subway.
