Barbra Streisand revealed that a knee injury will prevent her from attending the third Honorary Palme d’Or of the 79th Festival de Cannes, an evening designed to celebrate her legacy.
The legendary star will be recognized May 23 during the Closing Ceremony at the Grand Théâtre Lumière in Cannes, France, but will not personally attend. The Festival de Cannes, or Cannes Film Festival, is running from May 12 to May 23.
“On the advice of my doctors, as I continue recovering from a knee injury, I am sadly unable to attend the Festival de Cannes this year,” she said in a statement issued on the festival’s website.
“But I am deeply honored to receive the Honorary Palme d’or and had so been looking forward to celebrating the remarkable films of the 79th edition.”
Streisand is the third set to be honored, after Peter Jackson and John Travolta.
The famous singer and actress explained that she wished she could continue with her original plan to attend.
“I was also very much looking forward to spending time with colleagues whom I so admire – and, of course, returning to France, a place I have always loved,” she said on the festival’s website.
“While I regret that I can’t be there in person, I want to extend my warmest congratulations to all of the filmmakers from around the world whose extraordinary talent and creative vision are being celebrated this year.”
The Festival noted they will proceed with the tribute as scheduled, and wished the 84-year-old their “warmest wishes for a prompt recovery.”
Actress Eye Haïdara will host the show, which will be broadcast live in France. (RELATED: Lady Gaga Leads Funeral Procession To Promote Movie In Demonic Promo Spectacle)
“My heartfelt thanks to the Festival, and to everyone who continues to support and champion the art of cinema,” Streisand said.
The legendary star didn’t disclose when or how she injured her knee, or when she expects to return to her scheduled appearances.
