Democrat Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy argued that his party has not embraced a sufficiently ambitious agenda during a stop on his book tour.

Murphy, who is widely viewed as a rising figure within the Democratic Party, used the event to criticize his party’s response to President Donald Trump’s victory and outline what he described as a bolder path forward during his May 26 book tour stop at Judson Memorial Church in New York City.

During the event, Murphy said he was “not easy on Democrats” in his book because the party needs to ask “some hard questions” about how Americans elected President Trump a second time. Arguing that Democrats’ “ideas are not big enough” and that “the problems that people are facing are enormous today,” Murphy laid out what he described as his “prescription for the party.” (RELATED: Blue State Senator Admits Who Democrats ‘Care About Most’ In Resurfaced Video)

As examples of the larger agenda he believes Democrats should pursue, Murphy called for a constitutional amendment banning “billionaire, corporate, and anonymous money” from politics, argued that “a minimum wage increase to $17 is not enough” because “people need a $25 minimum wage at least to live in this country,” and said Democrats should not simply support a level playing field in the workplace but instead “tilt the playing field towards labor unions.”

Murphy argued that organized labor helps workers secure higher wages, stronger bargaining rights, and a greater sense of community, adding, “I just think our solutions have to be bigger.”

While criticizing Democrats for what he sees as a lack of boldness, Murphy advocated for a significantly more progressive economic agenda, including a minimum wage increase beyond the $17 level often discussed by Democrats and a labor policy framework explicitly designed to favor unions.

Murphy’s call for a $25 federal minimum wage mirrors legislation introduced by Democratic California Rep. Delia Ramirez. The Living Wage for All Act states that “it is a national priority that work pays a living wage to all workers” and would gradually raise the federal minimum wage to $25 per hour while providing for future adjustments tied to economic conditions.

Murphy also expressed frustration with his fellow Democrats, saying, “There have been a bunch of moments over the last year-and-a-half where I have looked around at my caucus and been disappointed by our inability to seize the moment.” (RELATED: Chris Murphy Wants To Jack Up Taxes On Certain Accessories And Guns Sky High)

Murphy’s call for a more aggressive political agenda comes as some polling suggests many voters already view the Democratic Party as ideologically left-leaning. A NYT/Siena poll released in May found that 46 percent of respondents said the Democratic Party is already too far to the left.

Consistent with his argument that Democrats have been too cautious, Murphy also criticized what he described as the party establishment’s skepticism toward Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. (RELATED: Blue City’s Plan To Pay DoorDashers More Runs Into Basic Law Of Economics)

“I say in this book, I still don’t understand why the sort of mainstream Democratic Party perceives Bernie Sanders or AOC to be the fringe threats to our electoral success,” said Murphy.
