Democrat Iowa gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand is facing backlash after a leaked recording surfaced in which he undercuts his bipartisan image and reveals a desire to punish political opponents.

In the audio recording, released Tuesday by Iowa Field Report on X, Sand says his planned alterations to the state government to promote centrist bipartisanship will only take effect after his term because Republicans need to “take their medicine.”

The leaked recording has fueled Republican ideas that Sand’s public message of unity and reform differs sharply from his private rhetoric. (RELATED: Dem Candidate Hoping To Flip Red Seat Apologized For Being White)

“Rob Sand and his entire campaign is one big fraud. ‘Better and Truer’? More like bitter and bluer,” Iowa GOP spokeswoman Jade Cichy said in a statement. “Make no mistake: if Sand becomes governor, his administration would be focused on settling political scores, not solving problems.”

Republicans need to “take their medicine”? That’s a remarkable thing to say if you’re running on a so-called unity platform. @RobSandIA’s campaign is all about political payback wrapped in feel-good slogans. #IAGov https://t.co/oZ7IWlysQ5

The criticism comes as Sand has attempted to position himself as a pragmatic Democrat capable of appealing to Iowa voters across party lines in a state that has trended increasingly Republican in the last three election cycles.

“This is hypocrisy at its finest. Rob Sand is promising retribution for his political opponents because governing was never about unity. It’s always been about power,” Republican Governors Association Communications Director Kollin Crompton said.

Sand has built much of his statewide brand around his “better and truer, not redder or bluer” slogan and has frequently emphasized government accountability and fiscal transparency.

However, Republican officials contend that the leaked audio raises questions about whether those themes align with his private views.

Behind closed doors, @RobSandIA promises retribution for his political opponents.

“Rob Sand will do and say anything to get elected. Just like Democrats around the country, Sand will campaign as a ‘moderate,’ but will govern as a Liberal,” Crompton added.

The Sand campaign has not responded to a request for comment regarding the recording by the time of publication.
