“Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” Season 2 has cast newcomer Ruaridh Aldington as a series regular.

The news was announced today at the “Star Trek” 60th anniversary panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Aldington will play Keats, a young alien with a mysterious backstory. An official description reads: “When the cadets make the risky decision to bring him back to Starfleet Academy, they realize he’s a wanted man, and his life is in danger.”

Taking place after The Burn, Season 2 will follow a new group of cadets who join together with high hopes for the future under the Starfleet Academy. Commander Chancellor Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) returns to educate the next generation of cadets, with Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta) becoming the personification of Ake’s attempt to fix a mistake from her past. And of course, the villainous Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti) is expected to return for more chaos.

Aldington is a London-based performer known for his work in 2024’s supernatural thriller “Drained,” directed by Sean Cronin and Peter Stylianou, as well as the 2024 indie thriller “Dirty Boy.”

Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau are co-showrunners on the series. They executive produce alongside Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa and John Weber. Season 2’s premiere episode was written by Gaia Violo, who created the series. Alex Kurtzman, who helmed 2017’s “The Mummy” starring Tom Cruise, directed the episode.

A release date for “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” Season 2 has yet to be announced. This will be the final season of the show. The series is produced by CBS Studios alongside Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.
