The Three Months Before You Start Trying To Conceive

If you’re planning to conceive, the work doesn’t start the month you begin trying. It starts about three months earlier. That’s the stretch when the egg and sperm that might go on to become a baby are still maturing, and it’s the window when what you eat, how you sleep, how much you drink and a few other daily habits can still shape the cells involved.

Most of us hear plenty about pregnancy and almost nothing about the run-up to it. So here’s what that window actually is, and what’s worth doing with it.

Why Ninety Days?

The number isn’t arbitrary. An egg goes through a long final maturation before it’s released, and that developmental stage runs for roughly 90 days. Sperm production works on a similar clock, with a full cycle taking somewhere around 70 to 90 days from start to finish.

What that means in practice is simple. The egg you release next cycle, and the sperm in play alongside it, are already partway through their development right now. Changes you make today don’t land instantly. They tend to show up a couple of months down the line, which is exactly why the three months before trying gets singled out.

It also means there’s no need to panic if things aren’t perfect yet. You have time to work with, and the body is fairly forgiving when you give it a run-up.

What Can Actually Shift In That Window

Egg and sperm cells are energy-hungry and sensitive to their surroundings while they develop. A few things seem to matter more than others during this period:

  • Nutrient status, particularly folate, iodine, zinc, selenium and vitamin B12, which are involved in cell division and healthy development.
  • Blood sugar control, since large swings can affect the hormonal environment eggs and sperm mature in.
  • Oxidative stress, the wear-and-tear from things like smoking and heavy drinking, plus a diet low in fresh produce, which sperm in particular are vulnerable to.
  • Overall energy availability, meaning enough food and rest that the body treats reproduction as a reasonable use of resources.

None of this is a guarantee of anything. Fertility is shaped by age and genetics, along with plenty of factors no diet can override. What preconception care can realistically do is give the developing cells a better environment than they’d otherwise have. For some couples that’s a small edge. For others, especially where nutrient levels were low to begin with, it can matter more.

It’s A Two-Person Project

For a long time the entire focus sat with the woman. That’s shifted, and for good reason. Sperm contribute half the genetic material, and sperm quality responds to lifestyle over roughly the same 90-day timeframe as eggs do.

Things that appear to affect sperm health include heat exposure, smoking, alcohol intake, weight and diet. The encouraging part is that sperm turn over completely every few months, so improvements a man makes now can be reflected in a fresh batch by the time you’re trying. Preparing together also tends to make the whole thing easier to sustain. It’s a lot simpler to cut back on drinking or cook better when you’re both doing it.

Habits Worth Looking At Early

You don’t need to overhaul your life. A few adjustments, started early enough to count, tend to be more useful than a dramatic push in the final fortnight:

  • Eat a wide range of whole foods, with plenty of vegetables, some quality protein, healthy fats and wholegrains.
  • Wind alcohol back, and if either of you smokes, this is the moment to stop.
  • Move regularly without going to extremes, since both very little and excessive training can affect hormones.
  • Protect your sleep, which supports the hormonal rhythms behind ovulation and sperm production.
  • Talk to your GP about whether a folate or folic acid supplement, and iodine, make sense for you, as these are routinely recommended before conception.

Give any of these a few weeks to a few months and they’ve had time to feed into that developing cohort of eggs and sperm.

When To Bring In A Practitioner

Plenty of couples do all of this on their own and never need more than their GP. But if you’ve been trying for a while, have had a miscarriage, or simply want a clearer read on where you’re both starting from, this is a sensible point to get some structured help.

Eggs take roughly 90 days to mature and sperm around 70 to 90 days, so the three months before trying is the window when your nutrition and everyday habits can still shape the cells involved. That is also why preconception care increasingly treats fertility as a two-person project rather than something only the woman prepares for. Couples who would rather follow a structured, testing-led plan than guess often bring in a naturopath at this stage; the Perth clinic Floralia Wellness, for example, runs preconception programs that look at egg and sperm health and nutrient status for both partners, and works alongside GPs and IVF teams rather than replacing them.

That last point matters. Good preconception support sits next to your medical care, not instead of it. If you’re going through IVF, or you have a condition like PCOS or endometriosis in the mix, keep your specialist in the loop and treat any naturopathic or nutritional plan as one part of a coordinated approach.

What This Window Can’t Do

Ninety days of clean living won’t reverse every fertility challenge, and it can’t undo age-related changes to egg count. If you’re over 35 and have been trying for six months, or younger and trying for a year, that’s a reason to see your doctor regardless of how well you’ve eaten.

The value of the window is narrower and still real. It’s the time to top up low nutrient levels and cut the exposures that make things harder, so you go into trying in better shape than you would have otherwise. Whether that tips the balance in any given month, no one can promise. But it’s low-risk, it’s within your control, and it’s one of the few parts of fertility you can actually get ahead of.

Final Thoughts

The three months before you start trying is a real biological window, not a wellness slogan. Eggs and sperm are maturing across that time, and nutrition and daily habits can still influence them. Treat it as a shared project and keep your GP in the loop. Bring in extra support if you want a clearer starting picture or you’ve hit setbacks. You can’t control everything about conception. This part, at least, you can prepare for.
