President Donald Trump may not be negotiating against an Iranian deadline. He may be negotiating against his presidential term.

“Trump will not reach an agreement with us,” Majid Shakeri, an adviser to Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said (1), according to translations of his remarks. “We are getting along with him until his term ends.”

He continued in the original X (2) post, “Giving or publicly confirming the pulse of negotiations with the US is sheer folly.”

Shakeri is an influential conservative analyst, but his comments reflect just one view from inside Tehran’s political establishment. They are not necessarily an official declaration that Iran has abandoned diplomacy until 2029.

In a separate post on X (3), Shakeri argued that Iran’s path to victory was neither continued fighting nor reaching an agreement. Instead, he called for managing a prolonged state of “neither war nor peace” until Iran achieves its aims.

Iranian officials have separately said the Strait of Hormuz will not fully reopen until Washington meets demands that include compensation, sanctions relief, the release of frozen assets and an end to military threats.

“Whenever the United States accepts Iran’s conditions, the Strait of Hormuz will certainly be reopened,” Revolutionary Guards spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi said (4).

Trump answered with a demand of his own. “I am likewise demanding compensation from Iran, for all of the people that they have killed and gravely wounded,” he wrote on Truth Social (5).

No deal, higher oil, more inflation

Markets reacted quickly. Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate both jumped about 5% Aug. 10 amid negotiation uncertainties, according to Reuters (6). Brent settled at $87.72 per barrel, while WTI reached $82.13. Brent briefly crossed $90 on July 11 before pulling back.

“I don’t see oil going below $80 any time soon, unless there’s a surprise announcement of a deal,” City Index analyst Fawad Razaqzada said (7).

In the first half of 2025, Hormuz carried 20.9 million barrels of oil per day — about 20% of global petroleum consumption — plus more than 20% of global liquefied natural gas trade, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (8).

Oil disruptions can reach Americans through higher gas, food, shipping and manufacturing costs. It can also keep inflation elevated and force the Federal Reserve to leave interest rates higher for longer.

World Bank chief economist Indermit Gill warned (9) that renewed escalation could reignite inflation, push rates higher and cut global growth to as little as 1.3%.

Investors cannot reopen Hormuz or force Trump and Iran back to the table. However, they can make sure one geopolitical chokepoint does not control the fate of their savings.

Secure your retirement

When oil climbs, inflation often follows and the stocks and bonds in a traditional retirement account are particularly vulnerable. That standard 60/40 mix might just be on shakier ground than you think, especially if the conflict starts eating away at the bottom line of American companies.

That’s why asset preservation is often one part of a well-balanced portfolio.

Physical gold is one asset that can give you another line of defense. It isn’t tied to one company’s profits, and it has historically attracted investors when war, inflation and uncertainty shake confidence in other assets. Plus, gold just touched a nine-week high (10) of $4,395/oz on Monday as hopes for an agreement faded. As of August 11, it sits slightly lower at $4,375 (11).

If most of your retirement savings are exposed, Goldco can help you move a portion into physical gold and silver through a self-directed precious metals IRA.

With a minimum purchase of $10,000, Goldco offers free shipping and access to a library of retirement resources. Plus, the company will match up to 10% of qualified purchases in free silver.

If you’re curious whether this is the right investment to diversify your portfolio, you can download your free gold and silver information guide today.

But gold isn’t your only option for securing your wealth. There are also income-generating assets that are resistant to inflation, whether prompted by war or cost of living.

Build passive income

Rental real estate may offer both monthly cash flow and the potential for long-term appreciation. During tough times, having an extra source of income can make or break your budget.

And besides, rents can adjust as prices rise, although real estate is not a guaranteed inflation hedge.

Collecting rent checks sounds appealing, of course. But chasing late payments, replacing broken appliances, and late-night tenant calls? Not so much.

That’s where mogul comes in. This real estate investment platform offers fractional ownership in blue-chip rental properties, which gives investors monthly rental income, real-time appreciation and tax benefits — without the fuss of being a landlord.

Each property undergoes a vetting process, requiring a minimum 12% return even in downside scenarios. Across the board, the platform features an average annual IRR of 18.8%. Their cash-on-cash yields, meanwhile, average between 10% and 12% annually. Offerings often sell out in under three hours, with investments typically ranging between $15,000 and $40,000 per property.

Getting started is quick and easy. You can sign up for an account and then browse available properties. Once you verify your information with their team, you can invest like a mogul in just a few clicks.

Step up to institutional real estate

But fractional real estate investing isn’t limited in scope, much like investing in stocks. Targeting specific types of property can let you diversify your assets even further for even more resiliency and potential profit.

Accredited investors can now tap into this opportunity through platforms such as Lightstone DIRECT, which gives accredited investors access to single-asset multifamily and industrial deals.

Lightstone DIRECT’s direct-to-investor model ensures a high degree of alignment between individual investors and a vertically-integrated, institutional owner-operator — a sophisticated and streamlined option for individual investors looking to diversify into private-market real estate.

With Lightstone DIRECT, accredited individuals can access the same multifamily and industrial assets Lightstone pursues with its own capital, with minimum investments starting at $100,000.

Crypto-curious? You don’t have to bet your savings

Gold and real estate are two physical assets that can let you hedge against ongoing war, but there are digital equivalents available too.

For example, bitcoin’s fixed supply and independence from governments have led some investors to call it “digital gold.” If fiat currency weakens, digital alternatives that disregard boarders could take center stage.

However, crypto does not consistently behave like a safe haven. Bitcoin, for example, can rise during political turmoil, but it can also plunge when frightened investors abandon risky assets. Carefully calibrating your position relative to your other assets

For investors who understand volatility and are looking to diversify beyond traditional stocks and ETFs, Robinhood Crypto lets you buy and sell cryptocurrencies with as little as $1.

With some of the lowest trading costs on average in the U.S., you could end up with up to 2.7% more crypto compared to other platforms.

Robinhood Crypto makes it easy to make investing a habit with recurring buys on a fixed schedule, while giving you access to all your favorite coins — from Bitcoin and Ethereum to Solana, Dogecoin, XRP, and more.

You can also transfer crypto securely to other wallets, set custom price alerts, track market trends, and manage your portfolio all in one place.

Robinhood makes your cryptocurrency security a top priority, with the majority of coins held in offline cold storage. Robinhood also carries crime insurance against theft and cyber breaches, and 24/7 customer support is available if you need help.

Not sure which move actually makes sense for you?

Gold, rentals, crypto, stocks and bonds can all play a role in a portfolio. The hard part is deciding how much of each you need, especially when every new headline seems to demand a different response.

You don’t have to make that call alone.
