A 93-year-old disabled woman was found dead inside her home after police discovered a naked 34-year-old Sudanese man at the scene, according to prosecutors.

The suspect, according to various reports, has been placed under formal investigation for murder preceded or followed by rape, adding another horrific case to France’s increasingly bitter fight over immigration, crime, and the authority of the state.

Marie-Louise, also known to neighbors as “Juliette,” had suffered a stroke and had been bedridden for months. Those who knew her called her “the little grandmother of the neighborhood” and described a vulnerable woman who depended on others simply to get through everyday life.

Her neighbors sounded the alarm Sunday afternoon after screams, insults, and the sounds of blows erupted from inside the house. Police found the front entrance locked, went around the back and encountered blood before reaching the bathroom, where Marie-Louise lay naked and motionless.

Officers found the suspect unclothed and apparently intoxicated, with some accounts saying he was asleep or dazed on top of the elderly woman. Prosecutors said he fought officers during the arrest and injured one of them; a later breath test registered 0.92 milligrams of alcohol per liter.

The autopsy revealed the scale of the violence investigators are examining. Toulouse prosecutor David Charmatz said examiners detected injuries suggestive of sexual violence, fractures to a rib and the spine, bruising to the face and neck trauma compatible with asphyxiation.

Authorities formally placed the Sudanese national under investigation for murder preceded or followed by rape and requested that he remain in pretrial detention. He remains presumed innocent unless convicted, while forensic and toxicological work continues.

The early reporting produced conflicting accounts of his immigration status, a point that matters in a case already exploding into France’s migration debate. Some outlets initially described him as illegally in the country, while later reporting identified him as a Sudanese refugee with lawful status and no criminal record; the supplied reports do not conclusively resolve that discrepancy.

For France’s sovereigntist right, however, Toulouse comes amid a larger argument about what Marine Le Pen, Jordan Bardella and the National Rally describe as decades of failed migration and security policy. Their charge is not merely that individual deportation orders go unenforced, but that successive governments transferred too much control over borders and migration to bureaucratic, judicial and European structures while admitting immigration on a scale they say the French public never authorized.

The raw immigration numbers give that dispute political weight. France ended 2025 with nearly 4.5 million foreign nationals holding valid residence permits, representing 8.1% of the population counted in the Interior Ministry measure, while the country also registered more than 116,000 asylum applications that year.

The weakness of France’s removal system has been documented by the Senate itself. Only 10.9% of OQTF removal orders were executed during the first nine months of 2025, while senators described the level as extremely low despite an increase in forced returns.

Those figures, to RN and other immigration restrictionists, amount to evidence of a state that has spent years admitting people more effectively than it removes those ordered to leave. The party frames that imbalance as part of a wider failure by what it portrays as a pro-immigration political establishment in Paris and Brussels.

Bardella has made the alternative explicit. In speeches this year he has promised that an RN government would “systematically” expel foreign criminals and offenders, restore minimum sentences, expand prison capacity and end automatic sentence reductions.

His immigration program goes substantially further than tougher criminal enforcement. Bardella has pledged a national referendum on immigration, abolition of birthright citizenship in its current form, national preference in parts of welfare and housing policy, and tighter national control over who may enter and remain in France.

That sovereignty argument sits at the center of the political project associated with Bardella and Le Pen. RN materials repeatedly argue that immigration policy should ultimately be decided by French voters and national institutions rather than judges, NGOs or EU authorities, with Bardella declaring that a people unable to determine its own migration policy has surrendered a fundamental element of sovereignty.

Cases such as Toulouse therefore strike directly at RN’s strongest political theme: the claim that borders and public safety are connected questions and that governments must answer for the foreseeable consequences of their policy choices. Critics of the current system argue that after years of high immigration and weak removal enforcement, officials cannot simply treat each new atrocity involving a foreign suspect as an isolated event devoid of policy implications.

France’s wider security picture is grim enough without exaggeration. Police and gendarmes recorded 132,300 victims of sexual violence in 2025, up 8% from 2024, and 85% of those recorded victims were female.

What fuels the anger on the right is the accumulation of individual cases involving foreign suspects, particularly where elderly and vulnerable victims are concerned. The supplied reports cite previous alleged attacks in Nice, Rennes, Paris and La Courneuve involving Tunisian, Moroccan, Sudanese and Algerian suspects, alongside other serious crimes whose perpetrators had different backgrounds.

Some of those cases raised especially direct questions about state enforcement. One involved a Tunisian suspect reportedly under an OQTF (deportation order), while another concerned a Sudanese man who had previously been convicted of sexually assaulting a vulnerable person, passed through immigration detention and was later released before another alleged attack.

The answer, for conservatives, is that nationality, legal status, deportation history and border policy become legitimate public questions whenever government decisions determine whether a foreign offender is in the country in the first place.

Investigators still have critical work to do in Toulouse, including establishing exactly how the suspect entered Marie-Louise’s house and reconstructing the final hours of her life. Neighbors said she sometimes left access available for relatives and caregivers because her disability made independent movement difficult, and authorities have not publicly established a prior relationship between her and the suspect.

Marie-Louise’s killing cannot, on its own, settle France’s immigration debate. But it has arrived in a country where migration remains high, barely one in nine OQTFs (deportation orders) was being executed in the Senate’s 2025 measurement, and RN is openly campaigning to replace the existing approach with a much harder sovereignty-first system.
