CNN legal analyst Elie Honig clashed with MAGA-friendly guest and former New York City Councilmember Joe Borelli on Friday over one of the Trump DOJ’s multiple legal failures, brutally telling him, “You’re out of your depth here.”
President Donald Trump on Friday relentlessly bashed one of his perceived enemies, New York Attorney General Letitia James, during a rally on Long Island, New York, where he called her the “most dishonest” and “a real slob.”
His remarks come after multiple failed attempts to prosecute her on mortgage fraud allegations.
James avoided prosecution the first time after the indictment was tossed out after a court ruled that Lindsey Halligan, the prosecutor on the case, was unconstitutionally appointed. After that, the DOJ failed to secure indictments against the New York attorney.
“She got off on a technicality. They had her, but she got off on a technicality. But let’s see what happens,” Trump said.
Borelli grilled Honig on Friday to “be honest” while he recapped the case.
“Because the prosecutor was unconstitutionally appointed,” Honig fired back. “Then, they tried to indict her again, and a grand jury rejected it, which almost never happens. Take my word for it. And then they tried again.”
Guest Lauren Wright told Borelli, “Don’t go up against Elie on this.”
“You’re out of your depth here,” Honig said, piling on.
Honig pressed Borelli further, asking if Trump’s DOJ should push for a fourth indictment, noting that a grand jury rejecting the third attempt was almost historic.
While Borelli conceded that the DOJ “probably wouldn’t have good luck” in their fourth try, he maintained Trump’s rhetoric that James’ indictment was thrown out due to a technicality against the prosecutor and not an evaluation of the evidence.
“If the president wants to call her a slob, it’s not a it’s not a newsflash that the president is not exactly kind to people he doesn’t like,” Borelli added.
