Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville gave Rudy Giuliani quite the NSFW title on Friday, following the right-wing figure’s demand that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani avoid attending Sept. 11 memorial events in his city.
“The biggest asshole of this century is Rudy Giuliani, and he said that Mamdani had no business being at the 25-year commemoration. You’re an asshole, Giuliani,” Carville told co-host Al Hunt on their Politicon YouTube channel Friday. “You’re really an asshole. There’s no other word to describe him.”
Giuliani, who was New York City mayor during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, addressed Mamandi’s planned appearance in an interview with conservative outlet Newsmax over the weekend.
“Having lost friends there and being very close to many of the families, it offends me that he’s coming,” he told Newsmax.
Giuliani claimed that Mamdani is “a clear supporter” of Islamic extremists, stating that “all of the Muslims he supports are murderers.” While it is unclear who, exactly, Giuliani was referring to, Mamdani has faced criticism for hiring Ramzi Kassem, a former defense counsel for an al Qaeda member imprisoned at Guantanamo, as his chief counsel.
Carville called Giuliani “a giant motherfucking asshole” for his attack on Mamdani.
Despite his brutal remarks about Mamdani, Giuliani exchanged a handshake with the current New York City mayor at Friday’s memorial ceremony.
Giuliani has also been hit with backlash after Mamdani released documents about the terrorist attacks that the current mayor said show city officials knew the air around ground zero was toxic but “lied” to residents and first responders about its safety.
“It’s hard to think of anybody who has fallen more in the last 25 years,” Hunt said. “It’s hard to believe that 25 years ago, after 9/11, he, I think, actually incorrectly, unjustifiably, was considered a great American hero.”
