Palo Alto (PANW)’s CEO Puts a Trillion-Dollar Number on the AI Security Gap

CNBC reported that Palo Alto Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:PANW) CEO Nikesh Arora said on September 1 that AI is forcing companies to modernize roughly $1 trillion of aging cybersecurity infrastructure that cannot handle attacks moving at machine speed.

Arora told CNBC’s Jim Cramer, “You have to rethink your cyber architecture,” arguing that security modernization is now a prerequisite for any company’s AI ambitions. Arora credited the industry’s shift in urgency partly to Anthropic’s release of its Mythos AI model earlier this year. He said its potential to expose software vulnerabilities changed customer attitudes faster than years of his own warnings had. Palo Alto has held conversations with roughly 2,000 companies about its Frontier AI Critical Defense Program, an initiative launched in August that uses AI models to test customer defenses.

The comments accompanied fiscal fourth-quarter results that beat estimates: revenue rose 34% to $3.41 billion, next-generation security annual recurring revenue rose 63% to $9.1 billion, and Palo Alto guided fiscal 2027 revenue to $14.1 billion to $14.2 billion, up 23% to 24%. Arora cautioned that the spending would take time to fully materialize.

Bull Case

The quarter backs up the CEO’s framing with real numbers, not just a soundbite. Revenue grew 34% to $3.41 billion, next-generation security ARR grew 63% to $9.1 billion, and fiscal 2027 guidance calls for another 23% to 24% growth, showing genuine acceleration underneath the trillion-dollar narrative.

The stated opportunity would meaningfully extend Palo Alto Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:PANW)’s growth runway, and there is already concrete engagement behind it. Roughly 2,000 companies have held conversations about the new Frontier AI Critical Defense Program just one month after its August launch, an early but real signal of demand.

Palo Alto’s platform strategy fits the moment it is describing. Years of building a consolidated security portfolio position the company to address both the legacy-infrastructure replacement cycle and the newer AI-native security stack at once, rather than solving only one part of the problem the way a narrower point-product vendor would.

The AI infrastructure buildout could create another durable source of cybersecurity demand. Palo Alto expects companies to invest heavily in AI infrastructure over the next five years. The resulting growth in traffic and data will increase the need for security and monitoring. This allows Palo Alto to benefit not only from companies replacing outdated security systems but also from the expansion of the AI infrastructure itself.

Bear Case

Palo Alto Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:PANW) CEO Arora’s own caution underlines a key risk. He acknowledged that the spending would take time to fully show up, and companies often need time to replace embedded infrastructure. Budget-constrained IT teams may also patch existing systems instead of committing to full overhauls in the near term.

Arora’s trillion-dollar figure could serve a promotional purpose as Palo Alto tries to persuade customers to accelerate spending. Other cybersecurity vendors could start citing their own large figures, which could weaken Palo Alto’s ability to use the figure as a unique selling point.

The $1 trillion opportunity does not turn directly into Palo Alto revenue. The figure shows cybersecurity infrastructure that companies may need to modernize as AI adoption grows. However, Palo Alto still needs to capture a portion of that spending. Hence, the size of the modernization opportunity does not guarantee equivalent growth for Palo Alto.

Palo Alto also faces strong competition for the same enterprise security budgets. Rivals including CrowdStrike are chasing those dollars with their own AI-native platforms. So Palo Alto must win market share within the growing opportunity rather than simply benefit from market expansion.

Hedge Fund Data

Insider Monkey’s database shows Palo Alto Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ:PANW) was held by 89 hedge funds in the second quarter of 2026, up slightly from 87 in the first quarter. CrowdStrike, its closest AI-security rival, matched it exactly at 89 funds this quarter, up from 79. The two stocks now draw almost identical hedge fund attention by fund count.

Conclusion

Palo Alto’s speedy growth and the quick shift toward AI create an important opportunity for the company. However, customers may take time to increase spending, while competition could limit Palo Alto’s share of the opportunity. Investors should watch whether Palo Alto can convert strong demand for AI security into sustained revenue growth and solidify its position against rivals.

While we acknowledge the potential of PANW as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
