Leonardo DRS, Inc. (NASDAQ:DRS) announced September 17 that it had signed a contract with Doosan Enerbility to supply electric propulsion for South Korea’s KDDX destroyer program. The award covers propulsion motors and the electronic drives that control them.

The broader program is expected to include at least six destroyers. That creates a potential market for Leonardo DRS, Inc. (NASDAQ:DRS), but the announcement does not establish funded orders covering all six ships. The investment question is whether this selection can develop into a profitable series of equipment and support contracts.

Bull Case

Leonardo DRS, Inc. (NASDAQ:DRS) brings an established customer relationship to the program. The company says its hybrid electric drive systems have been provided for 20 Korean frigates across the FFX Batch II, III and IV programs. That experience strengthens the commercial case for winning work on another naval platform.

For Leonardo DRS, Inc. (NASDAQ:DRS), inclusion in a ship’s propulsion design could support repeat orders if additional vessels retain the same equipment. Reusing a proven configuration can reduce the customer’s need to qualify a different supplier. Spare parts, maintenance and future upgrades could create further opportunities as ships enter service, subject to separate awards.

The award also fits an area already contributing to growth. Leonardo DRS, Inc. (NASDAQ:DRS) reported second-quarter revenue of $913 million, up 10% year over year, with electric power and propulsion among the growth drivers. Funded backlog reached approximately $5.1 billion at June 30, up 17%. Those figures predate the September announcement and provide context for assessing the eventual size of the Korean opportunity.

Bear Case

The announcement did not provide contract value, delivery timing, or expected profitability. Investors therefore cannot determine how much the award will contribute to revenue or earnings at Leonardo DRS, Inc. (NASDAQ:DRS). A strategically useful selection could still represent a modest financial addition.

Execution also matters. Leonardo DRS, Inc. (NASDAQ:DRS) must deliver equipment that works within a larger shipbuilding program involving other suppliers. Changes to the ship’s design, testing requirements or procurement schedule could delay work or increase costs. Any production spending ahead of customer payments would also affect cash flow, even if the contract ultimately earns an acceptable margin.

Repeat business for Leonardo DRS, Inc. (NASDAQ:DRS) depends on additional ships receiving funding and subsequent awards preserving attractive economics. The planned fleet size alone cannot establish future revenue. Support work could extend the relationship, but investors need evidence of actual contracts before treating it as a durable recurring income stream.

Hedge Fund Sentiment

The filings available so far reflect positions held before Leonardo DRS, Inc. (NASDAQ:DRS) reported the Korean destroyer propulsion contract. Insider Monkey’s database showed 32 hedge funds holding Leonardo DRS, Inc. (NASDAQ:DRS) at the end of 2Q2026, up from 28 funds three months earlier.

Conclusion

Leonardo DRS, Inc. (NASDAQ:DRS) has secured a credible export milestone that builds on existing naval relationships. The opportunity becomes more compelling as funded ship orders, contract values, and delivery milestones become visible. Investors should watch whether equipment awards translate into profitable revenue and whether support contracts follow. Successful execution could establish a longer commercial relationship; the current announcement leaves its financial scale unquantified.
