Shares of Elon Musk’s space company SpaceX (SPCX) have been on a roll since its IPO. It just so happens that the roll has mostly been downwards, which was expected after a bumper initial burst. Among the few noticeable concerns raised by the naysayers, the increase in capex has been acting as a headwind against SPCX stock.

Well, the proposed $100 billion starship complex in Louisiana is the company’s way of messaging that there will be no slowdown in capex spend.

Starship Ambitions Powered by Louisiana

Expected to be spread over 125,000 acres near Pecan Island, the planned facility is projected to feature five launch complexes, each equipped with two pads, as well as infrastructure for propellant manufacturing, power generation, vehicle processing, and employee housing. Construction is set to start in 2027, with the initial launch aimed for 2029. Management expects the project to create 3,000 to 10,000 jobs.

But why was Pecan Island chosen as the proposed site for the complex, particularly?

Well, SpaceX plans to launch a massive constellation of up to one million solar-powered AI data-processing satellites. These satellites require sun-synchronous orbits (SSO) to maintain consistent sunlight. Pecan Island allows rockets to launch southward directly into these high-inclination polar orbits without flying over populated areas of the continental United States.

Further, Pecan Island sits in a region with abundant natural gas infrastructure, including easy access to major hubs on the Texas-Louisiana border. This proximity allows SpaceX to build a self-sustaining spaceport that includes massive on-site methane production and dedicated power generation without straining local grids.

Finally, the Pecan Island site is positioned near the Freshwater City boat launch, offering direct access to the Intracoastal Waterway and the deep waters of the Gulf. This coastal access allows for easy, direct barge transport of massive rocket stages straight to the launch pads.

Notably, the site could be the third launch base for Starship when complete, with one already operational in South Texas and another one planned at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The facility would also provide a boost to SpaceX’s wider ambitions of building data centers in orbit. Aimed at overcoming the severe energy and infrastructure bottlenecks currently constraining AI growth on Earth, in space, satellites can harvest continuous, unconstrained solar energy without the interruptions of weather or nighttime. This environment yields about eight times the energy output per square meter compared to terrestrial solar panels, offering an incredibly stable and abundant power supply.

Furthermore, space provides a highly stable operating environment free of variables like humidity and weather, allowing operators to design entirely new, lightweight radiative cooling systems that function efficiently in a vacuum to dissipate the extreme heat generated by AI chips.

Q1 Provides a Solid Launch Base if Steered Correctly

SpaceX has achieved notable revenue expansion in recent years, rising from $10.4 billion in 2023 to $18.7 billion in 2025. The firm recorded profits of $791 million in 2024 before reporting losses of $4.9 billion the following year.

Operating cash flow strengthened over this timeframe, advancing to $6.8 billion in 2025 from $4.5 billion in 2023. The company closed 2025 with a robust cash balance of $24.7 billion and minimal short-term debt, which helps alleviate liquidity risks.

Meanwhile, during Q1 2026, revenue increased more than 15% year-over-year (YoY) to $4.7 billion. Conversely, net losses expanded significantly to $4.3 billion from $528 million in the comparable period a year earlier. Cash flow from operations rose to $1.05 billion from $727 million, and the company ended the quarter holding $15.9 billion in cash.

Capital expenditures have increased substantially over the past three years as well, climbing from $4.4 billion in 2023 to $20.7 billion in 2025. Spending on AI has grown especially quickly, beginning at $463 million in 2023 as the smallest category among space, connectivity, and AI, before jumping to $12.7 billion in 2025 and becoming the dominant investment area. This progression shows how the company, which originally emphasized space operations and connectivity services, is now positioning AI as a central foundation for future initiatives across its businesses.

Examining the first quarter 2026 revenue breakdown, connectivity continues to lead with $3.3 billion of the $4.7 billion total. The heavily invested AI segment contributed $818 million, a solid result for a newer line of business, while the space segment generated $619 million.

Looking ahead to Q2 2026, analysts currently project revenue of $6.9 billion and a per-share loss of $0.26, implying a YoY decline of approximately 100%. Any significant departure from these figures could potentially spark additional selling pressure for a stock with a short interest of 2%, suggesting that investors should proceed with caution.

From a valuation standpoint, SPCX stock trades at elevated levels. The forward P/E ratio of 1,556.72 times, P/S multiple of 42.79 times, and P/CF multiple of 66.06 times all sit well above the respective sector medians of 13.94 times, 1.21 times, and 7.74 times. However, to bind SpaceX to a specific sector would not be appropriate, as it has operating businesses in different industries. Thus, looking at its multiples in isolation and in the future regarding its historical averages would depict a much fairer picture of the stock’s valuation.

Shares of the $1.8 trillion market cap company are down 13% since its IPO.

Analyst Opinion on SPCX Stock

Considering all this, analysts have assigned a consensus rating of “Moderate Buy” for SPCX stock with a mean target price of $217.85, which denotes a potential upside of 56% from current levels. Out of 35 analysts covering the stock, 23 have a “Strong Buy” rating, two have a “Moderate Buy” rating, seven have a “Hold” rating, one has a “Moderate Sell” rating, and two have a “Strong Sell” rating.
