Airbnb (NASDAQ:ABNB) CEO Brian Chesky told CNBC’s David Faber at Goldman Sachs’ technology conference this week that AI is the best thing to happen to his company. Most executives who make that claim offer vibes, but Chesky backed it up with numbers.

He said Airbnb is shipping 80% more software than a year ago, and that almost half of customer service tickets are now handled by AI. He also argued that the long-run economic value of AI will accrue to the companies applying it, comparing the technology to electricity.
Airbnb’s Q2 2026 receipts are strong, though shipping velocity and deflected tickets are input metrics. The real question for you as an investor is whether the AI story shows up where it matters: bookings, take rate, and margin.
Receipts Behind the AI Boast
Chesky’s operating claims track what Airbnb reported for the quarter. Revenue rose 16.54% to $3.608 billion, net income climbed 27.1% to $816 million, and free cash flow jumped 31.62%.
The AI-specific evidence is clearer than most companies produce. Airbnb’s 8-K exhibit shows customer support cost per booking fell about 16% year over year, and the AI assistant now resolves nearly 45% of issues without a human agent.
Chesky told analysts on the call, “It’s not about how many tokens you use, it’s about the throughput of your product and the quality of your product designs and how much you’re shipping.” That framing matters because inference costs are small relative to conversion gains at Airbnb’s scale.

The margin math supports him. Adjusted EBITDA margin landed at 35%, and management raised the full-year 2026 target to at least 35.5%. Airbnb is absorbing higher AI spend and still expanding margins.

Selling Tickets and Other Adjacencies
Chesky’s adjacency argument is that AI lowers the cost of standing up new lines of business, using ticket sales as proof. His verbatim line: “We’re selling tickets on Airbnb now. We had no business selling tickets, but now we can spin up new businesses.”
The receipts here are thinner. Experience supply grew nearly 80% year over year, and Airbnb added grocery delivery, car rentals, airport pickups, and resort passes to its services roster.
Hotel nights are growing approximately three times faster than home nights, and about 35% of first-time hotel guests return to book a home. That is a genuine cross-sell producing repeat demand.
Adjacent expansion is also where platform companies most often overreach. Services remain a small share of the business, and Airbnb is asking you to trust that AI-driven speed will let it win categories where Booking Holdings (NASDAQ:BKNG), Expedia Group (NASDAQ:EXPE), and Viator already compete.
Electricity Analogy, Tested Against Peers
Chesky’s electricity comparison, that appliers eventually capture more value than builders, is a defensible reading of general-purpose technology history. If AI capability becomes cheap and widely available, competitors get the same tools and the advantage compresses.
The peer set is talking the same language. Booking’s Q2 2026 revenue grew 8.2% with adjusted EPS of $2.54, and its Transformation Program now targets $650 million in run-rate savings. Expedia grew revenue 14% with adjusted EPS of $5.76.
Airbnb outpaced both on the top line, and TripAdvisor (NASDAQ:TRIP) went the other way, with Q1 2026 revenue down 3.9% and the stock down 50.31% over the past year. Chesky’s growth-gap claim holds against the group.
Whether the gap is durable is another matter. Uber Technologies (NYSE:UBER) CEO Dara Khosrowshahi is running a similar playbook, citing near 100% adoption of AI coding tools among engineers. The tools are becoming a baseline requirement across the industry.
Where ABNB Stock Sits
Airbnb trades around $167.65, up 23.53% year to date. The trailing P/E sits near 40x, forward P/E near 30x, and the analyst target is $180.57.
That valuation demands the AI story keep translating into bookings, conversion, and margin. Q2 delivered on all three, plus $1.1 billion in repurchases against $3.4 billion remaining authorization.
Bookings are cheaper at a forward P/E of about 15x, though growth is slower and the stock is down 18.22% year to date. TripAdvisor is restructuring toward experiences after agreeing to sell TheFork for $700 million.
