Anderson Cooper told Kelly Ripa he is still “mortified” about Madonna spanking and humping him on stage at Barclays Center in Brooklyn in 2015.
Cooper recalled the moment during Wednesday’s episode of the “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast. He said Madonna invited him to join her at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and things took an unexpected, dramatic turn. Cooper described the moment the spanking, humping and props were introduced.
“I didn’t know what the hell was going on,” he said to Ripa. “I was terrible. I danced terribly. It was mortifying.”
Cooper said he has tried “to forget” the incident, without success, and admitted he didn’t expect Madonna to grind on him and seductively hand him a banana during her performance of “Unapologetic Bitch.”
The awkward moment left him confused and caught him completely off guard.
He described what it was like for him to be in front of such a large crowd at the Barclays Center, with the Queen of Pop putting him in the middle of a very unpredictable situation. Cooper expressed his utter confusion as to what to do with the banana.
“I open it up and I start to peel it and eat it, and then all of a sudden, I start lowering down on this little electronic elevator disappearing on the stage just, like, eating this banana …” Cooper said. (RELATED: ‘Threatened By My Power’: Madonna Tells Critics They’re The Problem)
Video footage of the concert shows Cooper slowly eating the banana while Madonna moans and groans while standing next to him.
In spite of the fact this happened seven years ago, the whole thing still boggles his mind, and the famous broadcast journalist and political commentator still can’t make sense of how things played out in that moment.
“To this day, I don’t know what happened,” he said to Ripa.
