An alleged drunken driver was speeding when she crashed into the back of a golf cart carrying four people and killed a bride who was celebrating her wedding that day, according to police.
The horrific and tragic incident unfolded on Friday in Folly Beach, South Carolina.
34-year-old Samantha Miller had just married Aric Hutchinson when they left their wedding at about 10 p.m. with two others in the golf cart.
They were heading to their AirBNB when they were struck by a speeding car. Police said that data from the suspect’s car indicated that 25-year-old Jamie Lee Komoroski was driving about 65 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone when she crashed into the golf cart.
Miller was still in her wedding dress.
Police said Komoroski was alone in a rented Toyota Camry. The golf cart rolled over several times and was thrown about 100 yards. Komoroski was not seriously injured in the crash.
The groom underwent several surgeries but is expected to recover. The other two victims are also recovering from their injuries in the crash.
Komoroski was charged with reckless vehicular homicide and three counts of driving under the influence causing death. She faces up to 25 years in prison for each DUI count if convicted.
A GoFundMe set up for the family received an outpouring of support and garnered over $305k in donations by Monday. Another page was created by Miller’s family as well.
“I was handed Aric’s wedding ring in a plastic bag at the hospital, five hours after Sam placed it on his finger and they read each other their vows,” wrote Aric Hutchinson at the donation page.
“Aric has lost the love of his life,” she added.
