Conservative activist David McIntosh, a co-founder of both the Federalist Society and the Club for Growth, slipped on a proverbial banana skin with his attempted attack of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D).
The former Republican congressman from Indiana, who served in Ronald Reagan’s administration, shared on X a photo of Mamdani holding up unripened plantains during a July news conference announcing city-owned supermarkets that would offer discounted food staples.
“I, for one, do not want to eat the suspiciously green bananas from the government store,” McIntosh captioned the image, incorrectly identifying the fruit.
He later doubled down by posting a video of himself holding and then taking a bite out of a ripe banana.
“Hey, Mayor Mamdani, I just got this banana at a nice little bodega down the street, owned by a sweet couple,” he said in the clip. “They don’t need a city store there. It’s really good, much better than your green bananas.”
Critics asked whether McIntosh had ever heard of a term called … ripening.
