“A Davis conviction could renew pressure to investigate Combs, but it would not prove Combs was involved,” criminal defense attorney Michael La Fratta told Radar.
Davis stands charged with murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further, or assist a criminal gang. Prosecutors alleged he provided the gun used to kill Shakur in 1996 as part of a larger scheme. They claimed Davis was present in the white Cadillac which pulled up alongside Shakur’s vehicle before someone, not Davis, opened fire.
However, detectives speculated Davis and others in the vehicle acted under orders from others. The death of Shakur has long been believed to be connected to the brutal feud of rival gangs Mob Piru and the South Side Compton Crips.
Detectives on the witness stand claimed that, during the course of their investigation, they were told Combs offered a cash reward in exchange for taking Shakur’s life. Davis told police this information during a conversation previously protected in a proffer agreement.
However, Combs has never been charged in connection with Shakur’s death, and he consistently denies the claims, speculations, and rumors.
