The widow of former NFL quarterback Dwayne Haskins claims that he was the victim of a blackmail scheme and had been drugged when he walked down a freeway in Florida and was lethally struck by a dump truck.
Haskins was mourned by his fans and fellow Pittsburgh Steelers players when he died after wandering onto a Florida highway in April 2022. The 24-year-old had stopped his car on the side of the highway and left it in search of gasoline.
More than a year later, his widow said in a lawsuit that he had been targeted by a criminal scheme.
Kalabrya Haskins sued four people she claims drugged the quarterback “to blackmail and rob him causing him and/or contributing to cause him severe injury and death.”
A toxicology report found blood alcohol levels far beyond the legal limit in Haskins’ body, as well as ketamine and norketamine.
Attorney Rick Ellsley, who filed the lawsuit, said there remained many unanswered questions about his death.
“It is believed that Dwayne was targeted and drugged as part of a blackmail and robbery conspiracy,” said Ellsley in a statement. “In fact, his highly-expensive watch was stolen from him shortly before his death.”
The lawsuit also names the driver of the dump truck who hit Haskins.
“Many questions remain as to why the truck driver did not avoid hitting Dwayne given the highly visible activity in the area before the impact and the fact that the other drivers did not hit Dwayne,” Ellsley continued.
“The truck driver’s cell phone records have not yet been disclosed,” he added. “The report also notes that the driver refused to provide a blood sample to the police at the scene and still has not provided the alcohol test results.”
The lawsuit also lists two restaurants, a golf driving range and a hotel over their alleged involvement in the blackmail accusations.
