A 14-year-old was shot in the stomach by a homeowner who told police that she saw the teenager try to break into a car in her neighborhood in southeast Houston, Texas.
Houston police said they were called to the neighborhood on Saturday after the shooting on Crestridge Street near Southville Street.
The homeowner said she ran out of her home with a gun when she saw the teenager allegedly attempt to break into the car.
The teenager ran away after being shot and knocked on a neighbor’s door to ask for help. He was taken to a hospital where he is expected to recover fully.
Police told KTRK that a witness told them they had seen another homeowner chase the teenager away from their car just before the shooting.
The woman who shot the teen was handcuffed by police, but it has not been determined yet if she will face charges.
Angie Richards told KTRK that she had seen two strange people looking into houses in the neighborhood before she drove away, and when she returned, she found out about the shooting.
“It was two guys I had never seen in the neighborhood before,” Richards said. “When I came back, my husband said he heard some gunshots, which is normal around here.”
The teenager will undergo surgery at the hospital.
“With these type of crimes, there’s always the risk of someone defending themself,” said Officer Croft to KTRK.
Richards said that crime had gotten worse in the neighborhood.
“At night you just gotta be real vigilant,” said Richards. “Everybody’s got cameras to try to catch these people but then, you know, nothing’s done.”
