Four Questions Worth Asking Before You Buy Anything For Your Sleep

The sleep aisle has quietly become one of the largest in wellness. Sprays, weighted blankets, rings, mouth tape, gummies, sound machines, apps that promise to talk you down. Most of it is pleasant. Some of it is expensive. Almost none of it gives you a way to tell whether it did anything.

So here are four questions worth putting to anything you’re about to spend money on for your sleep. They’re pragmatic rather than technical: you don’t need to know anything about sleep science to use them, and you can run all four in about a minute while the thing is still in your hand.

1. Are You After A Sticking Plaster Or An Overhaul?

Start with yourself rather than the product. Both are legitimate purchases; they’re just different purchases.

Some nights you want to take the edge off… a long flight, a noisy hotel, one bad Tuesday. A pillow spray or a sleep story suits that well, and the promise is usually kept.

If you’ve been sleeping badly for months and you want that to change, you’re shopping for an overhaul, and most of the aisle isn’t selling one. Read the claims closely and you’ll find the majority of sleep products are honest about being comfort rather than treatment. The disappointment tends to come from taking a sticking plaster home and expecting an overhaul.

2. Is There Compelling Evidence Behind It, And What Kind?

Not “is there a study.” There’s nearly always a study, and it’s nearly always small and funded by the seller.

Better to ask what sort of signal you actually have. Has a professional body recommended this, in writing, for the specific problem you have? Are there reviews in any volume somewhere other than the product page, and does anyone in them mention still using the thing three months on? And whoever else is recommending it, were they paid to?

Across most of the sleep aisle the first of those is simply absent, and that isn’t damning. Nobody has issued guidance on weighted blankets in either direction.

It does mean one part of the aisle stands apart. For sleep problems running into months, the American College of Physicians recommends cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, or CBT-I, as the first thing to try, ahead of medication. That’s an independent body, writing about a defined problem, and a much stronger signal than anything printed on a box.

One caveat worth carrying with you: “CBT-I” is a label, and labels get applied loosely. Plenty of apps take the name while leaving out its more demanding parts, so the label on its own doesn’t tell you much.

3. Does It Leave Anything Behind?

The tempting version of this question is “what happens when you stop?” That one doesn’t sort the aisle as neatly as it sounds, because almost nothing survives being abandoned. Stop the spray and you’re back where you started. Stop getting up at a consistent time and you’re also back where you started.

The sharper question is whether using it changes anything beyond that night. An eye mask doesn’t, and doesn’t pretend to; it’s equipment, and good equipment. A changed wake time is different in kind, because what you’ve altered is what you do, and that can hold once the work of establishing it is behind you.

Neither is better. But one is a permanent running cost and the other is front-loaded, and it’s worth knowing which you’re signing up for.

4. How Much Effort Are You Willing To Put In, And How Much Are You Expecting Back?

Worth answering both halves honestly, and in that order.

Most sleep products ask nothing. You spray, you wear, you press play. Effortlessness is the pitch, and if what you want is a better Tuesday, effortlessness is exactly the right thing to buy.

The approaches with independent backing follow a defined protocol, and they do ask something: keeping a record for a fortnight, shifting the time you get up, getting out of bed when you’ve been lying there a while. That’s inconvenient, and it’s the usual reason people stop.

The mismatch to avoid is expecting a large result from something that asks nothing of you. A product that requires no change can’t change what you’re doing, and if a sleep problem has been running for months, what you’re doing is most of what there is to work with.

So Where Does This Leave The Aisle?

Largely intact. Buy the eye mask. The blackout blind is genuinely good. If a sleep story gets you through a bad Tuesday, that’s a better Tuesday.

Two things worth holding on to. Don’t conclude that nothing works because the sprays didn’t. And relaxation isn’t the opposite of the behavioural approach; it’s one part of it. The difference is whether it sits on its own, or inside something that also changes what you’re doing the rest of the time.

Rest is one of the apps in this market, and takes its structure from CBT-I principles. If you’re weighing them up, it’s worth checking which ones follow the full protocol rather than trusting the description on the listing.
