California Mayor Gavin Newsom pounced to the attack against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis after Disney dropped a plan to move 2,000 jobs from California to Florida with a $1 billion investment.
Disney had originally planned to require the employees to relocate to a campus to be built at Lake Nona. The plans were announced in July 2021.
On Thursday, the company’s chairman of parks, experiences, and products division said the company had cancelled the plan.
“This was not an easy decision to make, but I believe it is the right one,” said Josh D’Amaro.
Newsom used the occasion to criticize DeSantis for his ongoing feud with the massive media corporation.
“Turns out, bigoted policies have consequences. That’s 2,000+ jobs that will be welcomed back with open arms to the Golden State. Thank you for doing the right thing, @Disney,” Newsom tweeted.
Disney has filed a lawsuit against DeSantis, charging that his administration has taken hostile actions against the corporation after it criticized his bill granting parents more rights to oversee what controversial curricula is being taught to their children in public schools.
Others joined Newsom in mocking DeSantis and blamed him for the loss of prospective jobs and investment in Florida.
Despite the decision, D’Amaro reiterated that Disney will continue with others plans to invest more than $17 billion in Florida over the next ten years and adding more than 13,000 jobs to the 75,000 currently employed by Disney in the state.
DeSantis has also been in a feud with Newsom that has fueled speculation both politicians are gearing up for a possible presidential campaign in 2024.
“All I can say is I think his hair gel is interfering with his brain function,” DeSantis fired back at Newsom in Sept. 2022.
A poll in March 2022 found that a large majority of Americans backed the parental rights law in Florida when it was accurately described, including 55% of Democrats. Only 26% of Americans said they opposed the law while 29% of Democrats said they opposed it.
