House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Sunday pounced on Donald Trump for suffering from “Obama derangement syndrome” as the president attempts to strike a deal to end his unpopular Iran war.
Jeffries, when asked on “Meet the Press” whether the war would’ve been “worth it” if Trump reaches an agreement that “ultimately leads” to Iran getting rid of its nuclear enrichment program, pointed instead to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal to “constrain” the program under then-President Barack Obama.
“It was Donald Trump who made the decision to rip that agreement up because apparently he suffers from Obama derangement syndrome,” said Jeffries, morphing a go-to insult Trump uses for his critics to target his predecessor’s efforts to reel back Obama-era actions.
Jeffries stressed that the 2015 deal saw several countries, including China and Russia, uniting to limit Iran’s nuclear aspirations.
“Donald Trump then enters us into this reckless and costly war of choice, and the question that the American people are understandably asking is how has this in any way made things better?” Jeffries said.
“Gas prices are through the roof, Iran is stronger now — not weaker — and the American people are less safe.”
As Trump looks to strike a deal with Iran on Sunday, the day of his 80th birthday, he’s taken to his Truth Social platform to scold Israel for attacking Beirut on Sunday, writing that the U.S. is “so close” to reaching an agreement with Tehran.
“We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon, and all sides should stand down,” Trump wrote.
He later continued, “This could be the beginning of a long and beautiful peace — Let’s not blow it!”
Iranian officials suggested Sunday that the Israeli strike on Beirut could be a blow to the negotiations between the U.S. and Iran.
