House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said that investigations into President Biden and his family’s business dealings are “rising to the level of impeachment inquiry” during an interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News.
McCarthy claimed that IRS whistleblowers combined with the revelation of shell corporations have provided Republicans with evidence they would not otherwise have obtained if they weren’t in control of the House.
“When Biden was running for office, he told the public he has never talked about business. He said his family has never received a dollar from China, which we now prove is not true,” McCarthy told Hannity. “We now have some of the most credible whistleblowers, these 10-year IRS agents who have come forward [and] said the Biden family has been treated differently,” he went on.
The speaker also alleged that the Biden family has received “millions of foreign money” through foreign shell companies and reminded Hannity that the information would not have been obtained if “Republicans had not taken the majority.”
“We’ve only followed where the information has taken us. But, Hannity, this is rising to the level of impeachment inquiry, which provides Congress the strongest power to get the rest of the knowledge and information needed,” McCarthy said.
“Because this president has also used something we have not seen since Richard Nixon: use the weaponization of government to benefit his family and deny Congress the ability to have the oversight,” the House speaker continued.
“If we are talking about millions of dollars coming from our top geopolitical foes … wouldn’t that mean that we have a criminal enterprise as president of the United States?” the Fox News host asked.
“The Biden family runs, they say, a company but never had an office, and shell companies to be able to pay through, but if they really ran it for foreign countries, why didn’t you get money from France, from Germany, from U.K.? Why does it have to be from China, Romania, these countries that have real challenges?” McCarthy replied.
White House spokesperson for Oversight and Investigations Ian Sams commented on Twitter, “Instead of focusing on the real issues Americans want us to address like continuing to lower inflation or create jobs, this is what the [House GOP] wants to prioritize.”
“Their eagerness to go after [Biden] regardless of the truth is seemingly bottomless,” he added.
According to The Hill, a Morning Consult poll conducted a month prior from June 22 to 24, 2023, showed that just 30% of registered voters thought an impeachment investigation into President Biden should be a “top priority.”
