President Joe Biden reportedly acknowledged his seventh grandchild only after Hunter Biden gave him approval.
Last week, Biden publicly acknowledged Navy Roberts as his granddaughter for the first time. Though she was born as his sixth biological grandchild in 2018 — the fourth child of Hunter Biden — Biden for years had refused to acknowledge her existence.
But that changed after the first son gave his father the “green light,” NBC News reported:
In recent weeks, President Joe Biden realized that his silence was no longer tenable — that it was time for him to publicly recognize his 4-year-old granddaughter caught up in a bitter child support case involving his son Hunter Biden, people familiar with the matter said.
But before he could do so, he wanted to take one final step: getting the “green light” from his son, which he received last week, one source said.
Not only does Biden now acknowledge that Navy exists and is his biological granddaughter, but the president wants to meet her.
According to NBC News, which spoke to sources familiar with the matter, Biden’s motive for wanting to meet Navy is to “dispel the notion that he was ignoring a vulnerable member of the Biden family tree that is at the root of his political identity.”
The story, moreover, repeatedly alluded to the political benefits of accepting Navy because doing so “serves to blunt a GOP line of attack.”
However, Republicans weren’t the only ones criticizing Biden. New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd scorned Biden publicly in a column last month for ignoring Navy. Her sharp criticism, sources told NBC News, “weighed on” Biden.
When and where the president will meet his granddaughter is not yet known. The White House is not saying much about the matter, dismissing questions because it is a “private, family matter.”
