A man’s decapitated body was discovered by his mother, and police believe that his girlfriend killed him after a fight in a suburb of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Henderson police said the woman made the gruesome discovery on Aug. 8 when she called police to report that she had found a body wrapped up in bloody blankets in a bed at her son’s home on Pala Dura Drive in Henderson.
The victim was later identified as 46-year-old Johnathan James Willette.
“Johnathan’s head had been severed from his body, and was not observed to be in the room,” read an arrest report.
It was unclear whether the mother knew at the time that he had been decapitated. It’s also unclear whether police have recovered the head of the victim.
Officers responding to the call said they smelled chemicals believed to be bleach and ammonia emanating from the body.
On Wednesday, Henderson police said they had arrested 45-year-old Devyn Michaels, who had been Willette’s girlfriend. Police said Michaels told them that Willette had been abusive to her and a child. She reportedly said that she had struck the man on the head when he tried to force her to perform a sexual act on him.
“Devyn stated that she did not want to kill Johnathan and only wanted to hurt him enough that he would have to go to the hospital because she wanted him out of the way so she could figure out what she could do with her children,” read the criminal report.
Michaels told police that she had married Willette’s son “to help each other out.” Willette’s son told police “that their marriage is not a typical marriage and that they got married so he could help Devyn with her medical issues.”
She also claimed that Willette forced his oldest child to shower while he watched.
Willette’s mother told police that she had noticed a butcher knife was missing before she found the body of her son.
Michaels has been charged with murder.
The Clark County coroner’s office has not yet determined a cause of death in the case.
