LGBTQ groups are demanding that the Los Angeles Dodgers shut down their “Pride Night” celebration after outrage from religious and conservative groups led to the team disinviting the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
The Dodgers originally invited the group as a part of their efforts to reach out to the LGBTQ community, but they withdrew the invitation after Catholic leaders and others pointed out that the organization mocks and insults the traditions of the church.
In response to the decision, Joe Hollendoner, the CEO of the Los Angeles LGBT Center, said they were calling on the Dodgers to completely shut down their “Pride Night.”
“We are deeply disappointed that the Dodgers, an organizational partner that has made significant strides towards dismantling anti-LGBTQ+ bias in sports and long-standing supporter of our mission, has decided to revoke their invitation to honor the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at their upcoming Pride Night,” wrote Hollendoner.
Hollendoner went on to accuse the religious right of aligning itself with “white supremacy” in its statement and said the group was “terrified” to see what would happen as a result of the Dodgers refusing to stand with the LGBTQ agenda.
Another LGBTQ group, LA Pride, said it was pulling out of the Pride night and demanded the Dodgers shut down their Pride night event.
“As a longstanding partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, we are very disappointed in their decision to rescind their invitation to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to be honored at the 10th annual LGBTQ+ Pride Night. As a result and in solidarity with our community, LA Pride will not be participating in this year’s Dodgers Pride Night event,” read their statement.
Neither group is calling on people to boycott the Dodgers’ event, but they hinted that they might be working on a competing event for the same night.
The Dodgers organization had originally wanted to give a “Heroes Award” to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
