A Wichita, Kansas, man is accused of entering a hospital and raping three powerless female patients before he was confronted and arrested, according to police.
Wichita police spokesperson Juan Rebolledo said Friday that 28-year-old Miguel Rodela somehow snuck into the Ascension Via Christi St. Francis hospital on Thursday.
The man is accused of raping three female patients who were “physically powerless,” according to the Wichita Eagle.
Rebolledo said that Rodela got into a fight with security guards and battered two of them before police were able to arrive.
Police responded to the call at about 2 in the morning over a report of “officer in trouble,” referring to the security guards.
Rebolledo said Rodela is neither a patient nor an employee of the hospital, and officers are investigating how he made his way into the facility. He said he did not know whether all the victims were on the same floor or whether they were on multiple floors.
The police spokesperson declined to divulge other details related to the victim’s ages and their medical conditions in order to protect their privacy.
The man was arrested and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail. He was charged with three rape counts described as “sexual intercourse with physically powerless victim,” and held without bond.
KAKE-TV reported that Rodela had been previously convicted of aggravated assault and theft in 2019 and was currently on a community corrections program according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.
On Wednesday, union nurses at the Wichita hospital voted overwhelmingly to strike in order to protest the company for “putting profits before patients.” Among their stated concerns was workplace violence.
