McDonald’s announced Tuesday that they will be phasing out their McFlurry spoons in order to reduce plastic waste.
McDonald’s is set to replace the McFlurry spoon with a more conventional utensil, the same type used for their sundaes, according to their website. The move is rooted in the company’s commitment to curbing single-use plastic waste, all while ensuring that customers can still enjoy the McFlurry they have cherished for years.
McDonald’s will start serving up McFlurrys with the same type of spoon the chain serves with its sundaes, which are smaller and use less plastic than the McFlurry spoons.

“Restaurants across the country are transitioning to a reusable spindle that’s swapped out and cleaned after each McFlurry is made. Once the mixing magic is complete, your McFlurry will be served with a smaller black spoon that uses less plastic (the same one that comes with our Sundaes),” McDonald’s said in the statement. “This small change will help reduce single-use plastic waste in restaurants – while giving customers the same delicious McFlurry they know and love,” the fast food chain further added. “That’s a win-win in our book.”
The fast-food chain also recently announced the “Free Fries Fridays” promotion, which gives customers ten opportunities to receive a free order of medium fries starting Oct. 27 and continuing until Dec. 29, according to CNBC.
