U.S. women’s soccer team star Megan Rapinoe said that she would welcome a transgender woman onto the team even if it meant replacing a biological woman.
Rapinoe made the comments in an interview with Time magazine during which she was asked to explain her support of transgender athletes at a time when many states are passing laws forbidding transgender athletes in some sports competitions.
“We as a country are trying to legislate away people’s full humanity,” she claimed.
Rapinoe has previously made headlines for penning an essay in support of transgender athletes in 2021 at the Washington Post. She is also well known for her vocal opposition to former President Donald Trump and conservative social policies.
“It’s particularly frustrating when women’s sports is weaponized,” Rapinoe continues. “Oh, now we care about fairness? Now we care about women’s sports? That’s total bulls****.”
She also denied that transgender women have unfair advantages in sports.
“Show me all the trans people who are nefariously taking advantage of being trans in sports. It’s just not happening,” she added.
When asked specifically if she would support a transgender woman in the U.S. women’s soccer team even if it displaced a biological woman, Rapinoe went so far as to deny the distinction even existed.
“Absolutely,” she said. “‘You’re taking a ‘real’ woman’s place,’ that’s the part of the argument that’s still extremely transphobic. I see trans women as real women. What you’re saying automatically in the argument—you’re sort of telling on yourself already—is you don’t believe these people are women. Therefore, they’re taking the other spot. I don’t feel that way.”
Rapinoe also recently announced that she would be retiring after the 2023 soccer season.
