Republican U.S. Senator for Utah Mitt Romney issued a statement criticizing the New York prosecutor on the day of former President Donald Trump’s arraignment.
Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records on Tuesday. Romney posted his reaction on his official social media account.
“I believe President Trump’s character and conduct make him unfit for office,” Romney wrote.
“Even so, I believe the New York prosecutor has stretched to reach felony criminal charges in order to fit a political agenda. No one is above the law, not even former presidents, but everyone is entitled to equal treatment under the law. The prosecutor’s overreach sets a dangerous precedent for criminalizing political opponents and damages the public’s faith in our justice system,” he added.
Romney’s criticism mirrors that of many pundits who have opined that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg overextended the case against Trump out of political motivations.
“The charges and evidence will be duly considered and the outcome decided by a jury with an obligation to fulfill its responsibility with the utmost care and impartiality. The American voters will ultimately render their own judgment on the former President’s political future,” Romney continued.
“Finally, it is also incumbent on all elected leaders to discourage violence and anger in response to this situation,” he concluded.
Trump lashed out at Bragg in statements posted to his Truth Social media account where he accused Bragg of leaking the charges illegally.
“There are no changes or surprises from those he leaked days ago directly out of the Grand Jury,” he wrote. “No Crime by Trump. What a MESS. Bragg should resign, NOW!”
He also indicated that he would be making a statement live from Mar-a-Lago later in the evening.
A CNN poll found that a majority of Americans supported the indictment against Trump despite not knowing much about what the exact charges are.
