More Americans will blame Biden for a debt default than will blame Republicans, poll finds

A poll found that more Americans would blame President Joe Biden if the debt ceiling crisis led to a credit default than would blame congressional Republicans.

The results were included in a Fox News poll of registered voters about the negotiations over raising the debt ceiling.

The poll found that 47% of Americans polled said they would blame Biden for a debt default, while only 44% said they would blame congressional Republicans.

The poll showed a dramatic reversal compared to results from the 2011 debt-ceiling fight when 47% of Americans blamed Republicans and only 32% blamed Barack Obama, who was president at the time.

While a majority of Americans believed a credit default would be catastrophic for the U.S., many believed the consequences were being exaggerated. 63% said it would be catastrophic, while only 32% said it was an exaggeration.

That’s another reversal from a similar poll in 2011, when only 39% said a default would be catastrophic, while 55% said it was an exaggeration.

The poll was conducted between May 19 and 22 and had an error margin of +/- 3 points.

On Friday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that the government would run out of money on June 5 without a new agreement in Congress to raise the limit.

Some Democrats have anonymously excoriated Biden for his lack of leadership during a public debate in which Republicans have gotten the upper hand by coordinating their messaging well.

“It’s time to bring the president off the bench, or bring somebody off the bench. No one’s responding to anything,” said one Democrat to Politico.

“The whole apparatus is not pushing back. Our side is just flat-footed,” said a Biden ally.

Also on Friday, it was reported that negotiators were getting close to a deal that would raise the debt ceiling and allow for another two years of spending.
