The world’s oldest living person celebrated her 117th birthday on Friday and continues to thrive while living at a care home in Surrey, England.
In a statement to ABC News, Ethel Caterham said, “Thank you for all of the kind birthday wishes. Even at 117, I’ve had many firsts this year, from stroking a llama to holding hands with the King! I’ve had a lovely day celebrating with my family and friends, and I look forward to seeing what next year brings!” the outlet reported Friday.
In the year 1909 when Caterham was born, Edward VII was King of England and William Howard Taft began his term as President of the United States.
The Guinness World Records, which has recognized Caterham as the world’s oldest person, said Friday she has been celebrated around the globe and confirmation of her title was confirmed by experts with LongeviQuest.
LongeviQuest CEO Ben Meyers said, “Her longevity is becoming truly historic, especially in terms of the UK. After becoming the first British person to reach age 116 a year ago, she is now the first British person to reach 117. She is consistently adding to her British longevity record, which was previously set by Charlotte Hughes who passed away in 1993.”
In September 2025, Caterham met with King Charles and recalled watching his investiture as Prince of Wales when he was 20 years old.

Caterham’s husband died in 1976 and she has outlived both of her daughters. She now enjoys the company of three granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.
Caterham previously told reporters she believed one of the secrets to living such a long time may be attributed to how she relates to other people in her life, per the ABC article.
“Never arguing with anyone, I listen and I do what I like,” she explained.
