The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office released details about the suspect arrested in relation to the shooting death of an auxiliary bishop on Monday.
69-year-old Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles David O’Connell was found at his home in Hacienda Heights dead from a gunshot wound on Saturday early in the morning.
A spokesperson from the sheriff’s office told reporters during a media briefing on Monday that they had arrested 65-year-old Carlos Medina after receiving many tips from the public.
Medina is the husband of a housekeeper who worked for O’Connell and had done work at his home. Sheriff Robert Luna told reporters that Medina was arrested after a night-long standoff at his residence.
“Detectives recovered two firearms and other evidence possibly linking Medina to the crime,” said Luna.
KABC-TV noted that a car likely belonging to Medina was towed from the residence and matched the description of a car caught in front of the bishop’s residence by a neighbor’s security camera.
Luna said that one tipster told them Medina had been behaving oddly and said something about the bishop owing him money. He stressed that they had not yet established a motive for the shooting.
Neighbors told the New York Post that Medina had taken care of the bishop’s beloved dog.
O’Connell was a native of County Cork, Ireland, and had served in the Los Angeles archdiocese for 45 years. Among the causes he championed were gun control, immigration, and the prevention of gang violence.
“Bishop Dave was a man of deep prayer,” said Archbishop of Los Angeles José H. Gomez in a statement Saturday. “He had a passion for building a community where the sanctity and dignity of every human life was honored and protected.”
