Summer is supposed to be a time of renewal. We get longer days, outdoor events, and plenty of excuses to enjoy the sunshine. But this year, record-breaking temperatures are dismantling our expectations and making many of our indoor, winter habits our new summer habits. When you factor in extreme weather events and a climate baseline that has dramatically shifted, vacation season is quickly becoming survival season.

For decades, researchers have understood that heat triggers physiological stress responses and is among the deadliest weather threats. Elevated cortisol, disrupted melatonin, and impaired prefrontal cortex function aren’t just physical inconveniences; they are psychological hazards. Not to mention that rising temps strain health systems and increase our costs.

Combined, these warmer months are taking a toll on our mental health, and our summer habits are likely not helping. To protect your sanity and maintain productivity into the Fall, stop fighting biology and prevent yourself from making these six common extreme heat mistakes:

1. Treating Heat Exhaustion Like Normal Tiredness

The biggest threat to summer mental health is our bodies’ attempt to cool themselves down. This act, which is thermoregulation, is an enormous physiological energy sink. We tend to label fatigue caused by heat as simple laziness or lack of discipline during this time of year. In reality, when our core temperature rises, cortisol spikes. Specifically, when temperatures rise, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activates to help regulate core body temperature, triggering the adrenal glands to release cortisol to manage the thermal strain. By labeling this “just a hot day,” you push through the early stages of heat stress, leading to emotional dysregulation, irritability, and poor decision-making by late afternoon. To combat this, acknowledge that you are operating at a cognitive deficit compared to winter months, and build buffer time into your day rather than powering through exhaustion. If your boss complains that things take longer, tell them you’re “energy regulating”.

2. The Compulsion to Perform “Fun”

There is immense social pressure to be outside, active, and socially engaged during the summer. The compulsion to seek out fun in summer heat is driven by a mix of biological boosts, social conditioning, and psychological relief from winter confinement. However, the goal of maximizing fun and forcing leisure activities can create a secondary form of burnout. If you aren’t doing something summer-y, you feel unproductive – even during downtime. Perhaps you know the pool is calling, and in a few months you’ll regret not spending more time at it. But pushing through outdoor events in 90+-degree weather drains cognitive reserves rather than replenishing them. This summer, feel free to embrace low-energy leisure without guilt. A staycation, reading in an air-conditioned room, or nighttime walk and talks with friends.

3. Prioritizing Sleep Duration Over Circadian Rhythm

Heat waves wreak havoc on our circadian rhythms. High ambient temperatures disrupt melatonin production because the body must cool down to initiate deep REM sleep. When this is difficult, the result is fragmented, non-restorative sleep that, as a result, increases anxiety and reduces emotional resilience the next day. Instead of focusing on how many hours you are in bed, try to think about when you are there. Secondarily, invest in cooling technology like fans, blackout shades, or portable ACs to ensure your core body temperature drops at night. Protecting your circadian timing will do more for your mental health than sacrificing sleep to stay up late during long summer evenings.

4. Scheduling High-Stakes Cognitive Work During Peak Heat

Corporate culture often ignores biology, expecting the same level of output in July as we get in March. Research shows that cognitive performance, including our processing speed, working memory, and problem-solving, drops significantly as ambient temperatures rise. Trying to strategize or close deals at 2:00 PM during a heatwave is fighting a losing battle against your own prefrontal cortex. If possible, try to heat-proof your calendar. Move your highest-stakes cognitive work to early mornings. Save administrative tasks, meetings, and lower-brainpower execution for the peak hours when your mental clarity naturally dips.

5. Using Caffeine and Alcohol as Coping Mechanisms

Summer has a cultural reliance on in-person fun. Throughout the day, this can create numerous situations where drinks such as coffee/iced coffee, energy drinks, or alcohol are imbibed. However, in extreme heat, these are dangerous crutches. They all mask dehydration, which rapidly amplifies brain fog, mood swings, and fatigue. Relying on them to push through the afternoon slump or unwind in the evening creates a vicious cycle of inflammation and cognitive decline. Instead, swap your caffeine for electrolyte-rich hydration, and consider staying alcohol-free during extreme heat spikes.

6. The “Q4 Reset” Procrastination

When summer hits, many professionals mentally check out, deferring important planning, meetings, decisions, and strategy until the fall. This is easy to do when so many are out for week-long vacations or have kids home from school, but it creates a looming Q4 anxiety. In fact, the mental load of deferred tasks hangs over people like a dark cloud. When you layer that psychological stress on top of physical heat stress, the combination feels overwhelmingly oppressive and leads to feeling stuck. The easiest solution is not to ignore your responsibilities entirely – just scale them down. Perhaps implement 15-minute micro-maintenance blocks or do monthly full-team check-ins to ensure everyone is progressing.

While we cannot control the weather, we do have control over how our daily habits and how we plan for the summer heat. Mental health in the extreme heat should never be about pushing through or endurance for the sake of having fun. Instead, respect your biological limits, and make minor tweaks to your usual habits to save you from summer burnout.
